Hi all, I asked in my previous posting on a different topic about a Le Capitole thread - so why not?, after all we have "All things Bananas" and a number of other threads on a single topic so perhaps this is a place to share our thoughts on this item.

How about a photo to start?

The "Le Capitole" was first released in the 1968 catalogue, as analogue Loco 3059, with a HAMO variant 8359.

There was also a 2nd class coach in matching livery as item 4075 which was identical to existing SNCF coach 4065 except for the colour scheme. It also appears very similar to the Belgium 4069 except for the Bogies (trucks) which were unique to the 3 SNCF models, 4050, 4065 and the new 4075.

Koll reports 3 versions of the 3059, with the first version produced only in 1968 being the rarest - this one has the front markings in Silver, a light-grey airtank and apparently the roof wiring is brown but it's been hard to find a good image to verify this.

Version 2 from 69-72 has white markings on the front, and the roof wiring is nickel.

Then they also list version 3 which was sold as parts, not a kit like the 3021/3921 but as a kit of parts which dealers could purchase to sell or assemble their own. This 'kit' was numbered 3959 and was available until 1976 and may explain a few items never having an original box.

There was also the 8359 HAMO version, and reference as well to "3859" in 1968 but I can find no reference to what 3859 might be, did they change codes for HAMO?

It turns out that my two are different, one has Silver Trim at the front, the other has White (they are really hard to tell apart at first glance), but both have the same colour Air Tanks, and both have Nickel roof wiring.

I should also clarify that the one on the right is from my Dad, in very tidy condition. This was purchased as a HAMO model, 8359 and comes in a light blue 3038 box with an orange HAMO sticker across the lid and the number label.

The one on the left is unboxed and was 'rescued' after being used for dart practice (I kid you not, there are holes in the window cellophane). It had also been dropped so that the roof of the cab at one end was distorted - I managed to very carefully straighten this but there are numerous chips to the paint-work. Still, it runs and at a distance looks ok - I certainly have items in worse condition so I can live with it.

Here are a succession of images from the catalogues relating to the Le Capitole - and it makes an easy topic to cover because the production life was short, the variants are (mostly) known, and they are well documented. But I'm hoping to share and learn some new info from this discussion.

Hi,

I don't have the original "Le Capitole" Märklin 3059. I should buy this repro set as it's not anymore very expensive and set has four coaches too. I like older French Märklin models and this "Le Capitole" looks great. I have the turkish 3038 and newer 3165. Original 3059 and four "right" coaches to it would cost nowadays very much...

Janne

Yes, I do intend to get the set myself, when I have some spare cash and one comes up at the right price that is. I have found there are enough differences to make them quite distinct, but not so much that you can't mix and match if you want to. For example, it was first believed that the coaches were simply produced from the old molds but not so. The windows are different, (10 on the 4075, two of them partly open, but only 9 windows on the repro, all of them closed), and the roof has no vents (the 4075 has two).

On the other hand, the repro (say 40175) has interior fittings which were not with the 4075 and that's a good thing - it's extra cost to add those details afterward.

Märklin does always like this when they make repro models. Same with many repro tinplate coaches and locomotives. I believe they want to do like this to keep their original old version owners happy and to prevent counterfeiting (fakes) models. This is good thing in my opinion.

Janne, the 28590 set can be found for around €400 ...

It is interesting to note that the 4 cars in that set have different running numbers.

The original 4075 running number is:
51 87 19_90 348_7

The repro cars are:
51 87 19_70 375_4
51 87 19_70 376_2
51 87 19_70 377_0
51 87 19_70 378_8

Hi all,

I just "must" get this repro trainset SNCF "Le Capitole" this year. It will look fantastic in the same display case as DB TEE red-beige train. I just felt in love with this one Love . Nice video and great info about this very fast train (200 km/h) for the end of 1960's... I would like to ask from you who have this set, is it running well? Is the motor "normal" 5-pole DCM?

Yum, it's good that the coaches have different numbers. But I will not ever extend this train with original old coaches as they cost nowadays around 140-200 euro per coach!! Scared In my opinion this nice set with factory digital locomotive and coaches is great purchase. I have soon a long list of items which I want to buy this year though. This train set, 37450 BR 45, 42758 DB train extension coach set, new Rheingold set... And so on, like always.

I really need those new display cases very soon Wink .

Cheers,
Janne

Thanks Albereto, I remember seeing your page once before some time ago but it did not come up in my searches or I would have put a link up myself.

Just looking at the source code, I see there are no Tags (Keywords) in the page and this may be costing you visitors - if you update the page and add "3059, Le Capitole" and any other variations such as 8359, 28590 etc you will come up much earlier in Google searches and this will be good for your site

It would be awesome to see the Koll's price chart updated with the last 5 years added Love

Good info all the same ThumpUp

Cheers

Some fun Le Capitole Trivia for you guys. Did you know there were two different shades of grey used on the train striping over the years. (meaning on the original 3059's/4075's?

Jan Eisen and a few others had mentioned it to me over the years, but it wasn't until I assembled a set that I noticed. I had cars with both shades of grey, and I sold the one "off" car as it was in bad shape. I now have matching cars, but the loco if the other grey. (doesn't bother me though- I think its a fun fact BigGrin

Thought I'd mention it as it seemed relevant to this discussion!

Interesting, but I presume you mean the 'White' stripe all the way along the side?? - The only Grey on the coaches is the roof, whereas the Loco does have some silver (looks grey) in the front striping on some models but same striping is white on others and this is noted in Kolls guide.

Could your 'off' one have been discoloured/faded by exposure to UV perhaps or have you seen others? - certaionly my ones do not show any variation of the white on the coaches.

But keep up the trivia, love it

Hi Steve,

Sorry- I guess white is a better description then grey, but correct. Its not fading, they are two different colors (or shades of one color) that several collectors have noticed aside from myself. Mine are packed up but I'll try and snag images next time they are out. You'd never really notice unless you were looking for it, but a fun bit of trivia

€528 for a 4075 where Koll's puts €200 ??? I usually find these on eBay at 50 to 75 EUR ...

What's the big deal here, the "spanking new" part, the dark blue box, or wot ... anyone ?

Y Confused

Thanks for the link Yum, that is a puzzle to me also. I am an open "Le Capitolist" for many years (in fact. I'd love to have dedicated "Le Capitole" thread or sticky in the collectors corner, there's just something about them) Drool Drool but why that one should go for such a high price is a mystery. Confused Confused

I'm ignoring the CCS66 because that is not yet sold and I always ignore 'asking' price, but this 4075 actually sold, and with 45 bids so there must have been a bit of interest, and the bidding history shows at least normal bidding up to around 200 Euro, and then two final bidders more than doubled it.

I'm not suggesting anything fishy but if another identical one of these were to hit the market and the same price achieved, I'd be a bit more confident.

Even the comment about the box date 03/70 says... im alten dunkelblauen Originalkarton von 03/70 (in the old dark blue original box of 03/70)

Huh?? - Dark Blue is the 'new' box, the 'old' box is light blue. I have two of that same version, and both still wrapped in their factory tissue paper, although they have been unwrapped of course. I would not class them as 'mint' but easily very good - excellent.

I checked the printing codes on my boxes, I have two of the Dark Blue variety, and four of the earlier light-blue variety.

"69 574 A 03 70 sh" Dark Blue
"69754 L 07 68 sh" Light Blue
"69754 TL 0168 sh" Light Blue

Taking above the print run info (yeah yeah I know, printing codes are just a guide, not cast in stone)....

A indicates a print run of 5,000 boxes (thanks to Paul Deardorff CCS800KrokHunter3 Offline see his excellent article)
L = 8,000 boxes
TL = 1,800 or 18,000?

I also realise that Paul refers to catalogues for the printing codes, rather than Boxes but knowing our German friends and their predilection for efficiency and conformity, would you not think the same scheme would apply? As I said, I am not taking the print code as hard evidence of production numbers, but they are at least interesting for speculation, contemplation and of course, imagination!

"Assuming" that there are no other box variations (surely must be at least one more, anyone?), this is either a total print run of 14,800 or 31,000 give or take. Would there even be 31,000 x 4075's in the world, somehow I doubt it given how they are sought-after.

But remember also that the 4075 (ironically) was withdrawn after just 5 years (catalogued 68-72) for lack of sales. What did Marklin do with un-sold stock?, keep in their shelves until all gone or destroy them (and maybe claim a tax loss?)

And just in case anyone is concerned about authenticating the codes, image below.

Cheers

Steve

What I meant to say was that the 4065 was already in existence when the 4075 was released. It is identical body, chassis, trucks & roof - so it would appear all that Märklin did was to apply a new colour scheme to that body. But of course, all the 4075 coaches are 1st class, there is no 2nd class in the Marklin Le Capitole range (was there even 2nd class in the prototype?)

Sorry for any confusion Blushing

Another photo, and no I did not consciously set out to become French, they 'just came my way', but it's a great setup

I don't have any of the Silver ones, they just never grabbed me, although when I see these all together, they are kind of conspicuous by their absence - I guess if some were to leap out at me, at a price I couldn't refuse I might get a few....

Taking above the print run info (yeah yeah I know, printing codes are just a guide, not cast in stone)....

A indicates a print run of 5,000 boxes (thanks to Paul Deardorff CCS800KrokHunter3 Offline see his excellent article)
L = 8,000 boxes
TL = 1,800 or 18,000?

Hi Steve,

TL are 18,000 pieces. For three-digit numbers small types are used.

A total production of 31,000 is few for these days. For example all codes of the 4636 CARLSBERG- beer car (which was not very popular) make a sum of nearly 100,000 in seven years. Popular cars of the 45XX-series were produced in numbers of 50,000 - 150,000 a year.

A long time ago somebody told me the story that the 4075 was discontinued early because it was to difficult to produce. Printing the white stripe on the red ground produced to much misprintings.

Regards

Markus

Not sure if the cinema car came with it (in the orange and grey), but I knew that the cinema car existed, so not sure sure how that was...Huh

UserPostedImage

Has Marklin ever produced there cars?

don't be silly, Märklin in those days only could count 1, 2 and 3, most the time they've produced 1 carriage or 2 and on very rare occasions they've produced 3 (1st class, 2nd class and baggage car). restaurant cars, baggage & 2nd class, 1st & 2nd class car had never been produced for foreign railway companies.

Hi John,

Don't forget 4031 (with baggage compartement), 4030 (1st and 2nd), 4068 and 4073 (both restaurant). But generally you are right: There are many cars missing.

I must confess that I do not have any French locos, and only a few coaches and rolling stock items, but I would very much like to own one of the new digital sets of this train, it is a great looking set and I love the colour ThumpUp ThumpUp ThumpUp

Not a great picture.,le Capitole at the station getting passed by my new SJ ore train. I guess this is a scene that would never happen in real life.

Hello, very nice and complete thread!
I have a Capitole 4075 with the light kit but it's missing the current pick up shoe. Could someone be kind enough to give me the part # so I can find one? Thanks!

Hi Francois,

They look great with lighting, especially in a night-time scene.

The full lighting kit for those coaches is 7320.

The correct pickup shoe was 7198

Here's an example from the 1972 catalogue....

Hello,
Thanks a LOT, that is awesome info. Since we are talking "Le Capitole", wouldn't it be awesome if one day Marklin produced a Capitole CC-6500 with the "Grand Confort" coaches to go with it? What a dream come true it would be...

I believe there is a le Capitole loco in the Railway Museum in Mulhouse. I picked up a brochure for the museum while in Alsace this last week, but didn't get to the museum. The brochure has a photo of a le Capitole loco on the front, and another picture of a loco with an Acquitane headboard inside.

Judging by the figures for floor area given in the brochure, this is a reasonable sized museum.

I would think a new type of French locomotive I on the cards!
But I think a loco which tooling could be shared between say Holland and France such as CC7100 to get maximum use of tooling! But I would really love a cc-6500 or better still new tooling for a BB9200! CapitoleLove

Ah, thanks for the picture. You have to admit the French do make some stylish locos, with the 'panorama' windscreen these really do look the part.
