Hi, I have just bought my first mini-club starter set and I have a question about the switches and I am hoping that someone can answer it. Just by looking at the switches, it seems that they have "live" frogs - am I correct? If so, does that mean that the two central "V" rails have to be joined to other tracks via an insulated gap to prevent short circuits? Thanks.

Carim, welcome to the forum!

Yes, the points have a live frog, so current flows to both legs of the points. As you have gathered, this means you need to use some form of isolation to overcome this. Marklin make insulating fishplates for this.

Hi,
I only have a limited amount of Marklin Z equipment but in setting up track I have never used insulated joiners except for block isolation. I believe the switches are insulated internally.

I have to admit I never heard this before.

A search with Google led to this picture:

I see a plastic frog with two separate contact lids - no need to use insulation IMHO.
I'll have to take a look at my Z gauge turnouts.

You need insulation when you want to have two ovals, connected by turnouts, but with the ability to run two trains independently. No insulation needed with only one electric circuit (or second circuit from catenary).

Tom
