Hi all,

With world war 1 having started exactly 100 years ago, I recently aquired some books about the topic. Most of them have railroads in them somewhere, since railroads were very important in the war effort. I would think this could be a great opportunity for model makers, but so far I am not aware of any WW1 specific models.

One book about german uboats descsribes how they were build in 3 big parts in Germany, then brought to Belgium by rail to be assembled in one of our harbours. I would be interested in models of such transports. It could make for a more interesting series than a Bellingrodt or Borsig one in my opinion.

I don't think politics can be a reason not to make a kind of rememberance set, most historians now seem to agree with the statement that no single country/side is to blame for WW1 (opposed to WW2, of which we do have some models like 3793 and 37024)

What do you think?

Bert

I totally agree, Bert!

I think it's about time somebody made some WW1 models. In UK Hornby is making a set with a troop train for WW1. I'm not sure if they are also making a goods train.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Here in the UK Bachmann have announced a narrow gauge Baldwin 4-6-0 tank and matching rolling stock of the kind that were used on the Western Front and elsewhere. They will of course be to British 00 (1/76) scale. After the war they were sold off to various industrial and narrow gauge lines.

I agree. World War I was a pivotal period in history. I would like to see Marklin release some commemorative sets from the Prussian, Bavarian and Wurttemberg State

railroads. I especially like the era I period and sets like these would add interest and enjoyment. I would guess that Fokkers and Albatrosses, artillery pieces, and all manner

of armaments and supplies would have gone to the front by rail. Early on, even cavalry troopers and there horses came by rail.

Well, somewhat tongue in cheek, one could say the King Wilhelm set released 96/97 would be WW1 vintage.

OK, it is not a centenary commemorative set ...

Not only german trains did transport soldiers to the front.
Even french and austria did transport soldiers, horses and artillery pieces.
If you want an train set,i suggest you get Brawas open wagons era 1 and Preiser figures soldiers era 1.
I´m not sure if Artitec do have artillery pieces era 1.
