I could not resist this little beauty which I found on Ebay and it will fit my modelling theme perfectly. However, like many things on Ebay, it does not come with a box or an instruction leaflet.

This will be my first Brawa loco and my first ESU decoder and I read that I will have to program it manually from my CS2. Does anyone know where I can get hold of the instructions on how to do this? A Google search and trawl through the Brawa website have both come up with nothing other than a maintenance manual which tells me where to oil the gears but says nothing about digital or programming.

Alternatively, could some kind person give me some pointers on what to do? I don't even know what digital functions it has.

With thanks as always.

That's a cute little shunter, Robert!

I bought my first Brawa this year too! They are very well made and go well with Marklin locos.

I entered mine manually on my MS2. Does the CS2 not have something similar? As long as you know the decoder address you can make a manual entry.

The MS2 is also able to "find" a loco even if you don't know the address. I can't say if the CS2 has a similar function, but I would be surprisedif it didn't.

But whatever you do, please handle this loco very carefully: some of the add-on plastic parts are so thin/delicate that they almost break off from looking at them... Wink OhMyGod

Good advice. The listing on Ebay said that one of the steps was broken, although it is included in the deal and a bit of superglue should do the trick (I hope).

OK - Back to my original question. I now have my hands on the little beauty and having made the running repairs to the broken steps I put it on my roller test stand and connected it to the programming output of my CS2 (60215). The loco runs furiously but will not respond to any input from the CS2. I have tried setting it up as a new loco on DCC address 3 and address 24 (I got those numbers from an old post on this forum) and clearly there is some communication between the Central Station and the loco because it stops and starts a few times as the progress bar moves but at the end the address on the CS2 always reverts to 0.

Any pointers as to how you did it, Ray?

The CS 2 reports the following CV's from the loco:
CV1 Primary address 3
CV2 Vstart 1
CV3 Acceleration rate 15
CV4 Deceleration rate 15
CV5 Vhigh 63
CV17/18 Extended address 192
CV29 Configuration options 0

I have tried to reset these values manually but it makes no difference.

I have no experience of changing CV values or 'Programming on Main' so any assistance that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

I have one final question to go with this as well, please. Does anyone know where I can find a suitable icon for the CS2 for this loco?

All help appreciated!
Robert

Märklin used ESU decoders for years - so maybe it's not the first.

Are you sure there is a decoder in the loco?
This is the normal behaviour for analogue locos on digital current.

Did you just enter the CV screen? Or did you press the "Read" button on every line (loco with arrow pointing up)?
Would be interesting to see the values for CV 8 and CV 7.

Sorry Robert, I've never used a CS2 so I don't know the steps.

On a MS2 it's very easy, just follow the menus.

For entering a new DCC loco you go to manual entry, new DCC loco, and then specify the Address, name etc. You can then change any of the CVs from the edit CV menu.

I don't know if the "Find" function works for a DCC loco. I'd have to try it on my one and only loco with DCC only, which is my Br96.

Spot on, Tom! I took the top off this morning and, guess what, no decoder!! That answers a lot of questions and I will now have to source a decoder or relegate the loco to display purposes only.

Hey-Ho -That's another one to put down to experience!

Do I have to use the appropriate Brawa/ESU decoder for this (it would certainly make the installation simpler - there is a 10-way socket provided on the loco board) or if not, can anyone recommend a suitable decoder. The space available is very limited - about 25mm x 15mm x 3mm

Thanks as usual.
