Hi

I've had a Märklin digital layout set up for the last year, up to now without any problems however:

In the last couple of days I've noticed that my (BR 81 - 29539) locomotive led lights appear dimmer and it stops at various points around the track.

The track appears clean when rubbed with a micro fibre cloth.

I was wondering if it could be a case of the locomotive needing oiling, although the wheels appear to be free.

Also when stationary the loco engine appears to have a low buzz, until the 'stop' buttons are pressed on the mobile station hand controller.

As, at the moment, I haven't a second locomotive to compare, Is there a way of performing a 'health check' on this locomotive?

I would definitely start by opening up the loco and check the motor for dirt. Also check the brushes if the loco has any, if they are worn the loco will be extremely unstable.

It can still be rust on the centre rail, caused by humidity of the air. A few rounds at full speed should improve the situation in this case, as the slider will clean the centre rail studs.

Do the lights burn bright while the loco stands still?

If the lights flicker at specific locations then it's probably a track problem.
If the lights flicker anywhere then it's probably a loco problem.

Sometimes too much oil in the axle bearings can lead to problems.

The motor is "maintenance free", so checking the brushes is not possible without voiding the warranty.

Tom

Woops! My bad! I should have checked the sparepart list, I assumed the loco used the old motor types. Sorry about that.

If the track is the problem how best should I clean it?

Do I need any special solvents?

The loco seems to stick on the joints between pieces of track

I have cured this problem:

I had run my loco on the digital hand controller 60653 since last February 2014 without the Sim Card inserted. It performed well.

Today I reinserted the card and the loco returned to its faultless smooth behaviour, therefor I can only assume that in time the encoded date resident on the controller had become slightly corrupted.

Tracks untouched, brushes, motor etc untouched.
