OK, so now I have quite a few locos with sound, and it occurred to me that I don't know when to use them. I am aware that trains blow their horns and sound their whistles at tunnels, level crossings, etc, but when do you use which sound?

I have the following sounds. When do I use them?

Steam:
Long whistle
Short whistle
Bell

Diesel and Electric:
High tone horn
Low tone horn
Bell

I'm sure some of you know all about this subject and can share your knowledge with the rest of us?

Hello Ray.

What I have saw:

Long/High for tunnels, crossings, bridges...
Short/Low when entering stations or to warn/notify something...
Bell for shunting...

Not officially. Cool RollEyes

Thanks Walter!

In the absence of any other replies I will take up your suggestions, which make perfect sense.

Hey Ray (the fool on the hill, I mean the rock?),Blink

Excerpt from attached German "Eisenbahn-Signalordnung 1959 (ESO 1959)" regarding acustic signals by train engineers (pg. 74 ff.):

Signal Zp 1 - "Achtung" - long
E.g.:
- to warn persons
- before moving a military transport or work train
- if the barriers of a grade level crossing are not closed
- if a grade level crossing is not appropriately secured
- to confirm that certain orders have been noted
- to draw brakman´s attention to expect signal Zp 2 or Zp 3
- by engineer of helper engine where appropriate
- during bad weather conditions repeatedly (every 10 to 15 seconds) in front of unsecured grade level crossings
Signal Zp 2 - put hand brake on (easy) - short
Signal Zp 3 - put hand brake on (tight) - three times short
Signal Zp 4 - release hand brake - two times long
Signal Zp 5 - emergency signal - several times three times short (applies to all staff)
Signal Zp 11 - come here - long-short-long
Signal Bü 4 - arrow panel = rectangular white panel with a black "P"or rectangular black panel with white frame and a white "P": whistle for three seconds

Smile
