Hello Jean-Pierre,

Wonderful items, as always!

You can notice on the roof on the RS 800 that the simulated "wiring" that is cast into the loco shell on top is not painted red/orange. This is common on many RS 800 locos from during wartime. This one was, therefore, most likely made during the 1940 - 1942 period or even late 1939 I have seen. I am not sure whether the frame is replica or original, but since it has glossy black paint instead of dull black, it is distinct from the 1945/1946 version. The 344 and 341 SB cars are late pre-war pieces because of the coloring of the roofs. The 343 is most likely from 1945, but the version from 1940-1942 is also very similar. One good way to tell if it is late pre-war or post-war is by looking at the roofs under UV lamp. Pre-war cars always had lacquer on the roofs, whereas Marklin did not bother with so much lacquer in immediate postwar years.

Here you can see a reference image of the RS 800 that I acquired in an RS 841 K set from 1939. It was brought over during the war by an American who was in the Red Cross near Goppingen!

Thanks for sharing the photos!

Hello Paul BigGrin

Thanks for all the details you gave. I am really happy to discover that this RS 800 is older than expected. I confirm that the frame is genuine.
Nevertheless I must confess that I have a doubt on the 341 SB roof. If the lights seems to be original, I fear that the roof itself is a replica. The color and the shine seem to be too perfect to be original.

A few more pics ? :

Hi Jean-Pierre,

Yes, it is hard to say whether the 341 SB is original, but it sure looks original!

We are eager to see what comes next from the "time machine" !!!

Hello Jean Pierre
Excellent pictures of fantastic trains (and you know now how much really I like these...Wink )

As for that 341 SB roof, I never heard of "replicas"...merely of "repaint", which is of course a continuous subject for debate!

Personally (just an opinion, everyone is entitled to differ!) I prefer a "good repaint" to a "bad original".

If you really are keen on getting the right "nuance and look", Ritter does repaint and matches everything at 99%! (They did my 3025, you saw it...it is perfect!)

In fact I have a bad (repaint) 341 roof myself that would benefit from a trip to Ritter...maybe we can join forces?

Hello Jacques Smile Smile

It's always a pleasure to see your signature on a post ! Well I will have a thought on that. Let me check carefully this roof and may be post a few more photos so I will have your collective opinion on it's real status...

As a matter of fact, will you go to Göppingen this year ?

Hi Jacques and Jean-Pierre,

Jacques, I think you are right, the main Marklin reproduction firms do not offer the 341 SB roof / lighting fixture in their main product ranges, but there are certainly reproductions out there. One such reproduction is an original 340 series roof that has been square-punched to fit the lighting fixture.

Jean-Pierre, to me the roof looks great, whether it is original or not, but if you are really curious, I think looking at the underside of the roof and the punching of the square holes would help. Also if you see that the soldering has been tampered with (freshly soldered is much more shiny) then you have reason to believe that it has been tampered with. Another technique is to use a UV Lamp and line up all your 340 series cars next to each other. In a dark room, shine the light on all the roofs and compare. There will be subtle differences even between original painted Marklin cars because of the way that the lacquer has aged, but usually you can see that repainted cars are much different.

Best regards,

Paul

PS. Jacques, I agree, Ritter is a master of repainting old Marklin locos. I even heard a secret once that a long time ago when old locos were sent to Marklin to be restored, Marklin actually sent them to Ritter to have them fixed!

Thanks Paul for your kind advices. I will have a look, I hope, this evening. Smile

I did heard as well in the past that Marklin used to ask Ritter to do some restoration for them.

As a tribute to Paul's nice photo, a few more pics...

Here you will (re)discover the following items :

- A RS 700.1 (1935)

- A passenger car 341.2 (1936)

- A dining car n°342.1 (1935)

- A luggage car n°344.2 (1937)

- two 422.4 platforms (1938-1942 1945, 1946) : they are far to be mint ! The second one has an awfull roof but the real color is white and blue despite the feeling it is darker. I hope to find in the next future two other platform in better shape ;

- a Fahrdienstleiter 469.1 (1937-1942, 1945 & 1946) ;

- 10 Eisenbahn Figuren 405.G (1937-1939)

Beautiful, Jean-Pierre...I like the inspiration!

If you are looking for 422 platforms in excellent condition, I have two right now in original boxes from the pre-war period (one is from 1937, the other I suspect from around the same time, but the box is not dated). They both look identical with the white roof and blue feathering on the sides. PM me if you have an interest.

Hello Jean-Pierre,

Yes, you are right, but I think in a different way. The figures actually are Marklin from the O Gauge production line (late 1930s). The package contains 5 figures and is numbered 2729 G/5. The reason I say that you are actually right is that Marklin did not produce these figures, they only sold them. The figures were made by Elastolin.

Here a photo from the 1938/1939 catalog:

UserPostedImage

And here a photo of the box with some figures:

Best regards,

Paul

PS. I'm worried that through this post I might introduce you to a whole new world of Marklin, O Gauge!

They are for the motor brushes - on those early models the brushes could be replaced quickly without having to remove the cover simply by removing those brass screws and out comes the brush & spring.

The basic motor design then is not all that different from the 'classic' Marklin motor of today.

Hope this explains

Hi Robert

1. Even if I have a couple of old trafos, I use a modern one for safety reason BigGrin
2. The blue SK 800 is a pre war version, one of the seldom true blue version.

Unfortunetly not... It is a crocodile which has been inspired by a pre war prototype and built in a very small quantity by TT shop for Marklin in 2005.

1. Even if I have a couple of old trafos, I use a modern one for safety reason BigGrin
2. The blue SK 800 is a pre war version, one of the seldom true blue version.

Here is another photo. I will post a closer one tomorrow.

Hello Jean-Pierre,
1979 I met a senior technician from Märklin. He showed me his outstanding collection Märklin gauge 00 and he told me quite a lot of the pre-war production as well as of the post-war production matters. I am a great fan of the loco SK 800 and he told me, that 1939-1941 only few SK 800 were officially painted RED on special request of important customer.
After the war cigarettes were of great value and Märklin workers "re-painted" locos in colour as requested in private. In addition Märklin had had at that time a repair service and painted locos as requested. This was "officially" done.
When we look at the official production line as published in catalogs and dealer letters there are no red or blue and gray locos mentioned.
Today it is very difficult to distinguish between old and new (=fake) red locos.
