Hello,

I'm putting together an express passenger train. Era III. I've got the Era III Trix 6 car passenger set and the Roco BR 01 steam locomotive.

I see Roco has the 76822 tank wagon.

Would the tank wagons be used in the passenger consists?

Not really.

Mixed trains were to be found on small branch lines with very infrequent services, but the large tankers you are looking at would usually only be run as part of a block train on main lines.

Do you have a number for the Trix 6 car set? It would be interesting to see which they are and how well they go with the Br01.

Nope.

Tank wagons are (and were) very seldom mixed with passenger stock. I believe there were some very nasty accidents in the early years after which this was adopted as a rule. An express wouldn't have been a mixed train, the closest you'd get to freight might be a post van on some routes.

You may see the odd mixed train with both on branch lines and narrow gauge, but even there the rulebook became complicated. For example, you'd normally need barrier wagons containing a non-flammable cargo between the tanker and the coaches.

Hi Motley,

The only tankers I know which were coupled to passenger-trains on main-lines in Germany were special equipped tank-cars for fresh milk.

Märklin had a model of that car, which was not really exact, but will do the job: 4872.

On the lower part of the page you find a list of trains: Numbers with "D" and "E" are Express-trains and fast trains, a "m" means military-staff use only (allied troops in Germany), "N" are local passenger trains, but "Expr" means express - goods. These where fast good-tarins without passengers.

Like the Märklin tank car it is not prototypically correct, but nice enough for me.

Ok thanks everyone for info. I was thinking it was used for water tender for the steam engine.

I have the Union Pacific excursion train, the prototype runs with the water tender for passenger trains with the 4-8-4 and Challenger.
So I was thinking the German express passenger trains would be similar.

I have a US based modern era layout. And I run museum passenger excursion trains. So this will be a restored German museum excursion in the US.
I've done some research, and there are indeed German steam locos here in the US that were purchased by US railroads.

Trix 23446 can be use with Epoch 3 BR01, BR03.10 or BR03 (not the streamlined).
Large Marklinist 3- Rails Layout with CS2/MS2/Boosters/C-track/favorites Electric class E03/BR103, E18/E118, E94, Crocodiles/Steam BR01, BR03, BR05, BR23, BR44, BR50, Big Boy.

Nowadays it's getting more and more difficult to get water for museum steam locos, so some of those trains have two tender cars or a tank car for water.

In era III, it was not difficult to supply water to the locos. On some long runs, they would take on water during a normal stop at a station platform (at certain platforms that were prepared for it). I never heard of tank cars for water being used at that time.

How strict is your definition of "correct"?
I would use any era III steamer for passenger or express trains with triple headlights - or a diesel or electric loco of that time.

The set is said to be authentic for the D 265 between Cologne and Hagen. MäTrix recommend their BR 03.10 with the new boiler for that train.
I don't know if that route was suitable for heavy locos like BR 01 or BR 01.10 at that time - but I wouldn't care.

I have the Marklin 43969 Set, which was issued to go with the M37915 Insider 03.10 of Y2010.

The M product blurb for the set says for express train D265 Basle SBB - via Wuppertal - Hagen, authentic for the route segment Cologne - Hagen.

So that gives you a clue and confirms what Tom says Wink

Anybody with the set, can they read destination board on the green 2nd Class car (the one equipped with the Tail Lights) that begins with a "V", maybe it is a station at or near Wuppertal ??
