Fellow Marklin enthusiasts. I am seeking your advice again. My layout is setup as a digital layout using C track and CS2. I recently acquired a vast quantity of Marklin M track in superb condition. I am considering expanding my existing layout to give me more and enhanced running options. I am wondering if I could integrate the M track into my future plans. I would appreciate your opinions and advice. My main concern is maintaining the running/operating qualities that I currently enjoy.

This issue probably has been discussed in the past and I regret causing any annoyance.

Thank you

John

John

I only have m track and run digital (CS2). The small issues I run into are likely faces by others with m and c track. Some locs seem to run better in one direction than the other. Similarly, some passenger cars run better when I reverse the direction. I don't use the curved switching tracks as I frequently had derailments and so just leave of any layout design.

I don't have any incurable problems with m track. Just need to 'fine tune connections' when I add a new loc but all locs and all passenger cars of any length run fine. Some people don't like the appearance of the long passenger cars on the 5100 curves. 5200 provide a nicer visual. I am indifferent.

Regards

Harvey

Harvey,

Thank you for that information I will bear it in mind when I get to designing the new layout.

Hi John,

M track is fine for digital operation. Ensure you put enough feeder wires to the tracks. On M track you will sometimes end up with gaps between rails (give the nostalgic sound…) so expect a bit more noise. You can dampen the noise by having an underlay and don’t screw down the track to the base board. Also you can solder the gaps between rails to make the transition more smooth.

However, personally I do find C track inferior as I also think it’s much easier to work with, especially for automated control with feedback etc.

Numerous post in form on this subject – see e.g.: https://www.marklin-user...k-review.aspx#post344376

On my own layout I have a mix between M, K and C tracks. My trains runs fine on all the tracks.

Hi John,

I had no problems that were peculiar to M track and digital, but I have to say that running on my newer C track is much smoother than on my old M track, especially through turnouts of all types.

My experience with M track is that the metal flexes and distorts over years of use, so that joints become less precise and more likely to cause derailments. I also had issues with the "frog" in the turnouts becoming loose, and with the points not lying flat against the running rails.

If your M track is, as you say, "in superb condition" then I suspect you will get few problems. It would be a shame to waste it, but just be aware of potential problems in the future.

being in perfect condition all you have to be aware of the gauge your wheels are set, the accuracy of the rail joints is not always perfect but you can either adjust the height or move them sideways to avoid any derailments, except the noise you shouldn't have any problems and with ballast around the track this would also reduce the noise.
