Five injured in train crash near Munich

The S-Bahn train collided with the digger at Olching, 20 kilometres northwest of Munich, injuring four construction workers and the train’s driver.....
Interesting but somewhat shocking photos of smashed train cab and the digger at trackside.

Sad stories. Is it inevitable to have train wrecks?

Train staff face record level of violence (07 Apr 14)
Boy, 13, found dead on Berlin train tracks (01 Apr 14)
DB DR FS NS SNCF c. 1950-65, fan of station architecture esp. from 1920-70.
In single point perspective, where do track lines meet?

Trains are mechanical devices, and eventually they all fail or have problems that can be unpredictable. In addition they are operated by humans, with an even higher error rate. Yes, "accidents" are inevitable.Blink

The only way to totally eliminate accidents would be to go back to the early days of railways and have the trains running at walking pace with a man waving a red flag as he walks ahead of the train. Mind you, even then he could trip up and be run over by his own train!

Every activity carries risk. Risks are assessed and mitigated against, but there are always unpredictable actions that can throw a spanner in the works. In the case quoted the digger operator should not have been using his machine so close to the tracks that the digger's arm could interfere with passing trains. This looks to me like a classic case of communication breakdown.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

We did had same accident in Sweden.
The default was digger and the train held to high speed on the work area.
The damage was much higher than in Munich.
We try to get in better with safety, but you cannot protect from the accident.

C'mon...

"The digger was being used for work on an opposite track to the train, but it appeared to pivot, hitting the driver’s carriage."

Pivot?!? Confused

If confirmed, isn't and accident... was a calculation problem to turn around the digger above the rails...

"Lucky" that wasn't major injuries. (e.g. fatalities)
