Hi y'all,

A few pix of the Orient Express exhibit now on the plaza at the IMA (Institut du Monde Arabe) ... :
http://www.imarabe.org/
http://www.imarabe.org/a...positions/orient-express
... a Jean Nouvel / Architecture Studio building inaugurated 1987, in Paris until August 2014 ...

An odd situation where a full train; short consist with only one loco and four coaches are parachuted into a big city square ...
Stood out in the semi-cold to buy tickets to visit the interiors for about 30 mins, only to find out that access would be 3 hours later, so said; "thanks, be back later ..." ;)

Only pix of the outside then here, the inside pix will have to wait, and the loco first :

Y Cool

PS: Do you SNCF fans own a 230 G loco ?

Hi Yum,

Great photos, and well worth your wait in the cold!

I have not got a 230G, or any 230, but I notice that Piko do a 230E that has a similar Belpaire firebox.
From an eBay listing:

Hello Yum
Thanks for the pics..;good to see them since I probably won't be able to come to Paris and visit the exhibition.
The exhibited coaches were last used on the Train Bleu and the pre-1969 Mistral.
You will notice that they have Minden Deutz style bogies for high speed running (max speed 160 km/h) and AC cooling equipment.
They also have traded their original "accordeon" interconnection passage for a high speed capable "rubber boot", compatible with the Mistral fluted stainless steel coaches they were used with in the Mistral.

These are a different set of coaches from the VSOE (Venice Simplon Orient Express) consist of 19 units which underwent a much deeper restoration and are in intensive use continuously since 1982!

for more info on that train check : http://www.vsoe.com/web/...orient_express.jsp?hll=1

Hi All , What a fantastic display to encourage families to explore further into railway history.

I am curious as to why the French railways use a lot of coal in Briquette form rather than normal mine run coal ? is there a higher calorific value in processed coal than ROM coal ? We did a day tour of the CF du Vivarais near Valence where briquettes were also used & entailed breaking the large moulded coal in to much smaller pieces before shovelling into the firebox . Is this a common practice on other European railways ?

For memory at Vivarais they used black coal for the briquettes but at some other museums I thought I saw brown coal being used .

Thanks in advance,
Tom in Oz.

It has been a long time since I have seen "Von Ryans Express" but I think the train figures prominently there too.
