Very interesting, unique locomotive class. Not the prettiest, but worth adding to a collection for just being strange! BigGrin

One of the funkiest locos I've ever seen-that means I'll have to get one! Hang on-is it diesel or steam? What was its purpose?

It's both... Well, not really steam but air...

Diesel engine compresses air that is pressed into the steam cylinders...

Two purposes in fact, one is "official" the other is "factual"

Officially: to test the feasibility of use of a diesel motor on a locomotive. In fact a very inefficient way to do it.

Fact: to test the new projected U-boots motors at a time when the Versailles treaty of 1916 barred Germany from building any submarine, or military planes

Other railroad related such "experiments" in the same period:

- the "Fliegende Hamburger" railcars, which tested the diesel electric transmission for submarines
- the "Schienenzeppelin" prototype which tested the Daimler Benz aviation motors and their propellers

But wasn't the Zeppelin motor a BMW engine (for use in Me 109 and such) ?

Afaik, Mercedes supplied Heinkel with V12's for various purposes...

Just asking for historical enlightenment here...

Shamu , As we live close to each other we could work out a deal where you keep buying all the models you need & have them posted to my place where I will check out the items on my layout [when it eventually gets finished ] & when it comes time to move up north to banana land you could pack the new items up with all the older trains & SWMBO will never know when you purchased them

Delete this post immediately after reading before SWMBO arrives home & everything will be Mickey Mouse.

Tom in Oz.

BMW it seems.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_VI

According to the article, was not used in the 109, according to the 1939/40 Flugzeug-Typenbuch, it was powered by a DB-601.
In the wiki article there were several aircraft applicattions for the BMW VI, but a search for BMW engines used in aircraft in the aforementioned book shows only radial engines listed.....it seems that the earlier V6 and V12 engines manofactured by BMW were surpassed by other factories, V engines listed are from Argus, Daimler-Benz, Hirth, Junkers and Maybach.

Bugger Brian,

I've just spent the last 30min looking for that. Found it and a few others after I bought the loco and it was the best.

Oh well at least it there for all to see, glad I checked first and didn't end up double posting. Laugh

It's one that I spot every so often and would like, simply because it is a diesel.

Sunbird trains currently show this set:
  • 34203 DRG Diesel "Forefather's" set of 3, Anniversary Edition $852

If I recall, this loco appears in Blue, rather than black.
There two other, smaller deisel locos in the pack.

But they may not have it. Huh

Hi Ross, be aware that the 34203 set has all three locos in silver, or bare metal, finish, and the decoders are Delta, so the running will be less good than the full digital versions.

The 37203 set has the same three locos but with 6090 or 6090x decoders, which are much better, and in fully finished paintwork. The v32 and v140 are in blue and the v188 in green.

All three locos are also available separately too.
