Hi!

I recently bought the BLS 486 electric loco that comes with Marklin starter set #29486. I am wondering if I can swap the chassis of this loco with Class 482 (37446) - Marklin 2014 item chassis so that I can get full sound feature as well as full lights function. Will it be prototypically correct and is the Class 482 and 486 from Marklin having the same chassis?

Thank you very much for your response.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi!

37446 is a Trix loco in a Märklin box (plastic body). You cannot swap the chassis with the Märklin toy Traxx locos (metal body).

Märklin 36617 is an option to get sound decoder and white LEDs (the catalogue advertises white LEDs for 29486, but it was shipped with yellow LEDs only).
Same chassis as metal Re 482/486.

IMHO the three-pole motors of the Märklin TRAXX locos perform well with the fx decoders, but bad with the Märklin mfx decoders. So I would not go for the 36617. I'd get an ESU decoder for the loco, maybe using PCB and LED boards from Modellbau Schönwitz or other suppliers.
Regards
Tom

You can order the white LEDs as parts. I don't think that any of the models come equipped with red tail lights, so it will never be as fully equipped as the 37446 or the ACME or Roco models.

The 36617 is advertised as having red rear lights (and I think in this case the product database tells the truth).
So with 29486 and 36617 the chassis can be swapped to get white and red LEDs within minutes and just with a screwdriver.

It seems neither the 37446 nor the 36617 can show a single white light at the rear end. So I'd expect that (except for long-distance head lights) the 36617 is on par with the 37446.

I use the lights/circuit board from Luessi. This board allows for Swiss lighting or red reverse lights (no high beams).

For decoders, I use ESU LP or LS

I have the Trix 22631 Re 482 and it has three white lights and two red taillights in analog use. I do not know if the standard Swiss one white taillight can be selected in digital operation.
The new Maerklin 37446 is basically the same model, but unlike the Trix version, will come with a factory installed decoder.

The manual that comes with the 22631 is the usual Trix standard and tells you nothing about the loco functions.
F0 turns on headlights (three white, two red), AUX3 and AUX4 (NMRA standard, not NEM 660 standard) turn off lights at one end, both lead to three white lights at both ends. No long distance headlights (loco is prepared for that, but LEDs are missing IIRC).
Thus the Re 482 can show the headlights it uses while operating in Germany.

The new items brochure does not promise Swiss lights functions for the 37446.

I like these questions and answers and what I can read, apparently nothing comes from the manufacturer itself to explain what is what.

Thank you very much for your extremely detailed and informative response. I guess there is no easy solution to upgrading my Marklin 29486 with sound and full suite of Swiss light functions. My original intent of replacing the chassis was to do a quick upgrade and then sell the chassis from the 29486 and the 37446 body on eBay for a reasonable amount.

The cost of upgrading using ESU Loksound decoder is not worth given that it alone costs US$100+ and then the cost of the remaining components. I also checked the ESU website and there is no sound project for Class 482/486 loco (:-. I think I will just stay put with my 29486 in its original form.

Re 482 is only the SBB number for DB BR 185.0 and BR 185.2 respectively.
There is an ESU sound project for BR 185.

There also is a sound project for the mSD. I am not satisfied with the mSD in that type of loco, but maybe you are.

I ordered SMD LEDs to get white lights for my 29846, but so far I didn't find the courage to install them. I got some flexboards left from my Schönwitz conversions so I can afford to mess up some of them (but I don't know yet when I will try it).
Sounds so simple: unsolder the old LED, glue the new LED in place, finally solder the LED.

Chris,

you can try buying the 36617. I think I saw it on ebay for around 170 EUR. You could then swap the shell with your 29486 and sell the DB 185.2 with the frame from the BLS loco for say 80 to 100 EUR, which would hopefully leave you with a loco with sound and lights for 80-90 Euro extra.

Hi! Mike,

Thank you for your suggestion. My plan was exactly as you suggested to try and swap the chassis and get the functions needs without having to resort to using a soldering iron.....Can I confirm that the 36617 has white/ red LEDs but no long distance and that it has 3-pole motor instead of a 5-pole motor?

Thanks again!

Cheers,

Chris

The model description on the Maerklin.com website mentions white LEDs and red taillights. I don't know whether the motor is still the same one as the other Hobby Traxx or what it may have been replaced with.
