Hi folks,

I let a bargain go last week.
Have been kicking myself all week Blink Blink

This Marklin Locomotive was sold for equivalent US$ 38.00
That was my bid on our local auction, but somebody else bid higher than me, and won the auction.

Marklin Loco

I just wasn't quite sure what I would do with it
Maybe it would have been a nice shelf item.
But do I really want shelf items ?
Or maybe place it in a display cabinet, which I don't have ...
Maybe put a decoder in it ??
Just wasn't sure about what I would do with it, so let it go.

What should I have done ?Confused Confused

Regards,Crying Crying Crying

It's only a bargain if you wanted it, or had a use for it. Otherwise, it's just throwing money away. I reckon you did the right thing...
But others will surely disagree ;)

Whatever, no point in kicking yourself now.

It looks old, tired, and worn out. The pantographs don't look like they are original either, unless it's a Primex loco, in which case it's not so old but even harder played with!

I think you did right to let it go. I would only have been interested in it as a restoration project, and I doubt it would have much value even if fully restored.

Here's one for not a lot more money but in much better condition:

Arh, its always hard to know. I personally would not have touched that with a barge pole, then again about a hour ago blew US$330 on a BR96 on eBay......... can't say I needed it as I already have 2 of them............ but it is the blue 3798 sooooooooooo...... HAD TO HAVE IT.

Sucker born every minute
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

I think I would have tormented myself over this as well - I have a soft-spot for the E44, I have an SET800 restoration going on, a very tidy 3011 (Red box), and the Blue one in my Primex set 2702, and that's after selling one last year!

The sound they make with their heavy die-cast body and the large motor is very distinctive, almost a hollow echo which I'm sure would be improved with a 5-pole motor and some thin insulation applied inside the body-shell, and ultimately changing to ball-bearings for the armature as per the other thread going on.

Personally, I think that one was in reasonable condition for the price and had you decided to get it I doubt you'd have regretted it but the fact you let it pass means it just did not quite have the 'wow' factor needed for you to hang in there, and that's fine, means you've saved some money for the next opportunity - can't win 'em all. There will be another. BigGrin
