New Zealand's national rail operator has pulled 40 of its newest locomotives from service after discovering they contain asbestos.

KiwiRail says urgent tests are underway on the engines to determine if the asbestos poses any safety threat.

The DL locomotives were made by Chinese manufacturer Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co Ltd.

KiwiRail says a routine test on Thursday uncovered asbestos in paint on one of the locomotives.

The Chinese manufacturer has since confirmed that it used chrysotile, or white asbestos, in a sound-proofing compound which is either coated with paint or sealed beneath panelling.

And the freight wagens they (Kiwi Rail) bought from China are abolute junk and had to be rebuilt as well. Damaged ones have been hard to repair because of the poor steel quality used in the build !
I hear that Melbourne is building their new Trams in Melbourne ThumpUp

I heard from a friend, who is involved with off shore manufacturing that you need a team of people on the ground continually testing as they will switch in lesser quality (cheaper) components without your knowledge. Chinese manufacturing can be good, but it will cost you lots to keep it at a level that meets western standards. It could explain why manufacturing is in decline over there.

After the war, the Japanese quickly learned the QA game and rapidly adopted and then redefined quality. I can remember that Japanese imports were rubbish in the '60s and supreme quality by the mid-70s.

The most remarkable thing I find is that when they found asbestos in some Australian locos a couple of months back, the manufacturer sent out a statment assuring Kiwirail's DL locomotives did not contain asbestos...

As for build quality, below is a photo of a DL with about two years of service behind it.

In the Marine industry is well known that ships coming from China are in general not of high quality while Korea and Japan is well known for high build (and trusted) quality.

Hence you need to have your presense in China to monitor the construction and to verify third party components. I am surprised if Kiwirails have not had their own site team in China to witness the building of the first trains? After all is not a small ordered they made?

Like anything in life - if it's cheap - it's proably not that good...

But it's never been easy for KiwiRails, for some reason the general public and especially the media in NZ is not very pro-rails and all stories are always with a negative anti-rail sentiment. It seems most people would rather have lots of cars and trucks on roads rather than investing more taxpayer money in the rail infrastructure or other forms of public transportation.
