Now that Marklin have announced the release of a Santa Fe "Super Chief" train for 2014,a set with F7 A-B-B units and 6 alu coaches,i looked into the actual history of this magnificent luxury train,"The train of the stars".
Producer Walthers in the USA have announced a similar train with individual coaches to be purchased.
Walthers also discloses the history of the train, with examples of actual consists.
There were 6 complete trains on a daily service between Chicago and Los Angeles.
The 1954 version had a total of 14 coaches, the 1958 version was in combination with "El Capitan",total 17 coaches.
Various combinations of A and B units were used.
It would be great to see the Marklin set run with 14 coaches!

See www.walthers.com/exec/page/super_chief .

Beautiful set. It does not fit my era (Europe, era 3). A few years back I would have been all over it, it is very desirable. But if I bought every gorgeous item Marklin made, I would be broke. Keeping to my era and region keeps me (barely) solvent.
Matt
Era 3
DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe
But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

Very true my friend!
The Marklin factory turns out more product than we can handle.
In my case it is more satisfactory to buy a limited number of items from saved money rather than buying a lot of stuff from borrowed money.
I have the 3060/4060 Santa Fe A-A,purely analogue,no need to have another set.
The Santa Fe coaches I purchased one by one some 10 years back, and sold them!
As explained in another topic on this forum Marklin issued a very nice California Zephyr set with A-B-B loco and 6 coaches some 15 years back, going price is Euro 500.-.
Still,USA trains appeal to me because long range Diesel passenger trains are not common in Europe.
I find the names fantastic,"El Capitan" smells like a good oldfashioned western movie!

Interesting to note perhaps that the prototype coaches were made of light steel ("Budd cars") whereas the Marklin coaches are made of aluminium.

Cheers,
Paul.

It is indeed a beautiful set!

Also for reasons of budget I decided, years ago, to refrain from getting any Marklin US trains, though I have been tempted recently to include a representative F7 in my collection.

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways
Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Santa Fe Super Chief by Walther's USA.
Great model with real life sound.
And what a great layout!
It is impossible not to love Santa Fe F7 locomotives!

And California Zephyr,not bad either!

Dear Panayotis,

You are up early on a Saterday!

Have tried to find clips of the real Super Chief and El Capitan but these seem to be very rare.
There are some clips of a restored Santa Fe F7 A-A at the Galveston Railway Museum, nice!

Cheers,
Paul.

Nice video's of nice models but..........!

Seing there has been criticism of Marklin running characteristics recently, I would have to point out the jerky slow running behavior of these Walters Trains

In the first Santa Fe video, when A&B units where positioning they could be seen hunting on one another, and in the California Zephyr video at the end as the train was stopping at the station you could see the jerkines in the coaches. !

Just sayin' thats all Sneaky

" Every Marklin layout needs a V200, a Railbus and a Banana car", not to mention a few Black and red Steamers, oh and the odd Elok !

CS1 Reloaded, Touch Cab, C Track Modules, K track layout all under construction. Currently Insider

Thank you very much!
Interesting stuff from the era of great trains in the USA!
Interestingly enough, one could still travel the same way in the USA today.
My wife and i are investigating a traintrip to Switzerland this summer.
The travel agency also has other traintrips on offer,in Europe,Asia, and the USA.
For some Euro 50.- per person you can travel by train from Chicago to Los Angeles,if you have the time.

"Ride The Chief"!
