Very interesting, and all seems to be coming together nicely !!
Wiring has always been part of the "learning how things work" Huh

This being the first time I have wired a layout, I am finding it very interesting - and time consuming. More so that the scenery to be honestBlushing

What a fantastic process!

I've just discovered model trains when I inherited my Dad's Marklin stuff from the 1950's a couple of months ago, and have been poking at various layouts to experiment and learn from. I hope you don't mind flattery in the form of imitation, because I would love to take this basic layout and turn it into a U-shape as a project to use as a learning process. I've learned a lot just from reading about your process.

This has been extraordinarily illuminating. Thanks so much for posting all of your impressive progress and talents!

Hi (TheFatTick)

Thanks for the commentsThumpUp

I hope this has inspired you to take up the saw and screwdriver and start building. As you can see this is my first attempt after having the collection stored for many years. What I do know is I should have started many years soonerRollEyes

All we ask on the forum is that you keep us up to date with progress and give us lots of lovely photos to look at.

I'd be interested just looking at what your dad left you.BigGrin

Hi Mike,

Nice organised wiring, thanks for the pics. I notice you use D computer plugs, 9 ,15 or 21.

I also notice your use of the Marklin connector pieces (the older ones), for which you have allowed ample room for plugging/unplugging.
I made the mistake on my layout of putting the connector strips (newer type) too close together, and as a result, have too little space to use all the connectors available. I am unable to shift them, because of touching fixed current connector pieces between modules (all 8).

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball

ThanksThumpUp

After all the discussion on the plugs to use between modules in another thread of mine, I tried other options but found the D plug to be the best. I have 9 pin for the outer track live and earths; the rest go through a 21 pin D plug.

I have found the 7209 a very useful piece for gathering auxilary live and earths together and linking the circuits.

Hennabm - I'm really not sure anyone wants to see my project, especially after a few moments of browsing all the magnificent work on this site. As of last November, I knew almost nothing about trains, absolutely nothing about electricity, and less than nothing about landscaping and modeling.

As for my Dad, he left a very simple setup which he bought in Germany in the early 1950's and augmented a bit in the 1970's. I never really saw it set up, except for a very basic circle he would put together on a coffee table at Christmas.

His original locomotive is a DA800 he obtained in 1954. The other locomotive he obtained in the 1970's, and has DB 81 004 as markings.

He had an assortment of rail cars that went with it, including both passenger cars that I think were from the 1950's as well as a mix of industrial cars from both the 1950's and 1970's. I've augmented those with some beer cars off of Ebay, just because.

He didn't have much track. Two turnouts, a crossing, a paved street crossing. Some basic buildings – an old station that's very cool but a bit beat up, a water wheel that doesn't operate. I expect I will replace all of the buildings, unless I can get the water wheel operating again.

He had two Super 280 transformers, one of which tried to cremate me along with my house by basically exploding the first time I plugged it in. I am either going to find someone who can re-wire both of them for me or buy some new ones. Not up for any fire in the train room that isn't a simulation.

When I opened his stuff to simply put up a Christmas loop, I caught a bit of a bug. I went ahead and built an 11x4 table to learn on, which I will rebuild once I am happy with my layout. Your layout was very much the inspiration for it, although I have changed the inner parts a bit. If I get around to learning how to post a picture I might do that once I get along a bit.

It's intimidating to think about how much work is involved, and I don't yet know what all I don't know. Should be a fun process.

Hi The FatTick

I think I knew just about as much as you when I set out just over a year ago to build my layout. It is only with the help of fellow enthusiasts on this forum and those I meet in Marklin Club UK that inspired and assist me with my ambition. Where abouts in the US are you as there are a number of forum members scattered across the country, which you my well be able to meet up with for further inspiration.

My father did exactly the same - started in 1957 with a small oval and reverse loop with some catenary. It wasn't until I started work that I started building my collection and now want to see it on a layoutBigGrin

The two steam engines you have are real classics - the DA800 and the Class 81. Both are worthy of showing.ThumpUp Ian55 has quite a collection of DA800s. Which rail cars do you have?

I too have a couple of the old 280 trafos. Mine are still operational but on the original wiring. For safety I have bought some newer 6631s from ebay.de as I can use 220v. Was your 280 a 110v or 220v version?

Your last sentence sums it up. It's fun and when all the signals and points are finally working and the scenery is looking good, you know the fun can continueThumpUp

Good luck with your journey and keep us all posted on developments.

We're all here to help - Remember there is no such thing as a daft question - believe me I've asked a few alreadyBlushing

Hi all

no photos this time as there is not much different to see from last time. Except for all the wiring is now complete and all the multi-plugs wired and attached.BigGrin

I have used a spare trafo and attached it to the various circuits on each board and checked voltage. I have also used a continuity meter to check the circuits.
The only problems so far are a few signal bulbs blown.Crying These are now on order and will arrive later this week.Cool

Just the second trafo shelf to build next weekend and then:

The next big thing is to set it up and test the full layout. with all trafos connectedScared

Hi all

I've had some luck tonight and sold my 110v trafo to a chap in Essex (via ebay)BigGrin

This brought a smile to my face after spending a frustrating afternoon wondering why a 7188 wouldn't work.

Having read all the instructions I knew of, it told me to earth the grey box if not connected to the track via the base plate. This was done.Smile

However........no matter what I did whether it was change the bulbs or check the connections a 100 times, the mast would not light. Confused
I tried a test lamp on each connection and it worked but I still couldn't get the mast to lightCursing

FINALLY a light went on - in my mind- try earting the mast post. Guess what it workedRollEyes RollEyes

Yet no where does it tell me to earth the mast as well.RollEyes RollEyes

Anyway success and so to bed in time for the first GP this yearThumpUp ThumpUp

Hi Ian

LOL LOL

It did feel like ground - hog day at times LOL LOL LOL

It is now all finished and waiting for a dry day for the first trial runScared.

During the trial fit I will also be adding the wiring for the 7072 etc as I'm not sure of the required lengths until the trafo shelves get added to the modules.

The circuit wires are all there as are the multiplugs etc.

I will also need to drill several more holes to feed the buildings in the Altstadt and several others.

More news when it happensThumpUp

Mike,

A tremendous effort !
I have done wiring many times, mostly upside down looking up at the underside of the board.
I see you have notated where the wires go to - well done on this - it will help you if you need to untangle something !

Hi all

WIth all my chores done yesterday and the promise of a dry cool day today, the 323i was rolled out of the garage and the modules erected for my first full trial run BigGrin

This wasn't without problems, I have to admit. For example wiring a middle track and calling it an inner track feed Blushing . This led to all sorts of problems with dead spots and me exchanging a signal because I thought it was the faultBlushing Blushing

Then I realised I haven't enough make up pieces for the catenary, so the trial was bitty for that. Ebay.de here we come again RollEyes
But the three main circuits and the goods yard and the brewery track all ran fine. BigGrin (In the endWink )

Anyway some photos of the day.

The other trafo board has yet to be painted Wink

I now have a snagging list of earthing issues; scenery fixes and lighting wiring to complete before my next trial in a few weeks time.

Tick tock...Scared

Hi Alan, Ian, Martin and Lasse

ThanksThumpUp

The snagging list runs to two pages of notebook. Most of it is touching in the scenery, as can be seen from one or two of the photos. For example where the flock doesn't reach the track fully or where the glue has dried out and the grass mat is lifting on a corner.
Other issues include providing a feed to the other side of a block signal and earthing the masts for the distance signals.

With work and house refurb then I think I will be ready for my next trial in early May.

Hi all

Having taken today and the rest of the week off to allow some alterations to be done to the house I was somewhat irritated yesterday to be told by the contractors that they won't be able to make it until Thursday and then have to come back again to finish the jobCursing Cursing Cursing

However looking on the bright side it mean a free day with nothing planned so I disappeared into the garage for the day to sort my snaggings from the trial run. BigGrin ThumpUp

Besides sorting various wiring issues and resticking some grass mat etc, I added a few road signs as well. Cool

Following on from a recent thread on the forum I have purchased a track rubber and some of that Track Magic. I went over the worsed bits with the rubber and then ALL the tracks with the Track Magic. Well all I can say it what a load of gunge came off the tracksBlushing Blushing Scared OhMyGod OhMyGod I used soem Johnsons cotton buds as they have strong shafts and pressure can be applied with them onto the rails.

Once I get to have a further trial run I think I may see a difference in how things run. Of course I have yet to do all the loks with the Track Magic as wellWink
