There are many in the Uk who have Marklin but are not members of Users and prefer to met and run trains.
It is perfectly possible for both to run and my idea of a Yahoo Group for a monthj or so allows UK folk to talk and decide what THEY want to do.
I see no advantage to have another thread in USERS just for a UK club which may well be subscription paying.

dave

That's ok, I am just offering the web services that are also available for free from my side. If you wish to go with a Yahoo group, that is excellent too...
I'm offering this service to a potential club thanks to Ian's initiative in this forum. A UK forum set up on this site would not be associated with m-users, except maybe a small miniscule note at the bottom like "Hosted by m-users.net" or such...

I'm just trying to offer some help, if needed... Smile

Hi Juhan. Help is of course appreciated. Any Yahoo group would be temporary to obtain ideas from future members.
It is unlikely that it will proceed as a UK Club would require a lot of work re advertsing etc. Contacting dealers and adverts in Continental Modeller etc. I had thought previously of this but finding a committee was difficult. Ian does well with the meetings at his place but I dont see more than 4 or 5 members who can meet without a lot of work being done to promote the idea.
There are lots of European model enthuiasts in the UK and there are clubs for most of the big manufacturers other than Marklin.
New members would be expected to also join Users net if they are website inclined. It is unlikely a UK website would be needed as the club could function with meetings and a quarterly newsletter etc.
However as said these things rarely happen but one day maybe Marklin will appear in the UK as a major brand.

dave
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Dave, I hope there will be an M Club UK... But as you say, probably most have their blinders on and are fairly "local" with the "nearest neighborhood" as the main geographical area for train activities.

So to set up a traditional club with postal newsletters and such is great, but wouldn't it be better to follow the times and and use the "e-media" instead of paper stuff? Maybe would even bring more UK model railroaders to get an Internet connection if they don't have it - and maybe finally see an use for the Internet?

Just my thoughts, I am not from the UK so I don't really know how the story goes over there... Wink

I've never belonged to a club and have told myself never to join a club.

the reasons behind are to a certain extend personal ones and the other reasons are pretty obvious, it doesn'ts matter which country a club is formed unless there is some special interest for a diverse section from the public, e.g. Railway societies. etc etc. there are the working people and the hanger on ones, the prospectus buyers and the one with a million dollar idea.
What I've read so far with the Marklin Uk club it will be different story as apparently there will be no club layout which to me, this seems to be a good idea, as history can tell, no one is ever happy what the other person produces or suggests.
Some people also don't like formal arrangements and this has shown in this forum and the success it has created by not creating a club rather an informal gathering of information and knowledge and it is almost for free, thanks to 1 person and his few helpers.

What has become, I assume, an enjoyable gathering, maybe twice a year at Ian's hideout, is not formal, there are no appointment fee's cancellations and if the road is passable, marklin-users friends instead of members will arrive when possible.

Besides my comments I wish you all a happy outcome and I'm already waiting for videos and photosBigGrin

Hi all,

I agree with what Juhan and also John have said, for the moment at least, let's keep it informal.

Juhan's offer of help with "web service's" would be much appreciated, as I'm sure you're all aware, I know nothing about that field, of course if you wanted help with some DIY, then I'm you're man. Smile

So, for the moment, if Marklin Club UK members are drawn from the forum, and hopefully with time, we can add to our numbers with those not wishing to be part of our forum.

I reckon, if we start with forum friends, and arrange a few meetings around our small country, say at Model Rail Shows, from that we can build a direction in which we plan to travel in.

Thoughts/idea's/ suggestions much appreciated.

Ian.

....................................

Hi Juhan. I have tried for many years now to get things going but not enough are prepared to put in the work.

Probably better to forget a club and just have a few guys meeting from time to time but it is not a UK Club and unless a few are prepared to give it a go it will never happen as far as Marklin is concerened.
There are of course plenty of Model rail clubs in the UK and I am a member of two but of course I am the only Marklin enthusiast.
Few of the Clubs are interested in a web site type club as they meet each month in person.

Good idea though but looks like another failure without committment to se it through which I understand is not for everybody.

For some reason the Hornby and Roco boys have the get up and go where Marklin just does not get the support.

However the two rail guys who visit me are great for the hobby as a whole and we enjoy our regular blether.

dave PS looking at the poll there are nowhere near enough to support a club of any type.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Voted!

I'm up for this, too. I'm closer (a LOT closer) to Bournemouth than Scotland, but would like to discuss this hobby one to one!

I haven't got a layout I could bring to events, but I hope to build one in the future.

If we're meeting in the middle, we could share transport, Ashley.

You can have different chapters within the Club like we do for ETE. For instance just in California we have SoCal, Bay Area and Sacramento.

You can have the main UK club but Scotland Chapter, Northern England, Wales, etc.

I would think that there are more mark lin fans in the UK that are not members of the web site, but ocasionaly view the site.

Just thinking could a 'Join the UK club ' add show up if a UK IP is detected and form a guest log in?

Maybe, but most Marklin modellers are H0 and 3 rail focused. The third rail is what differentiates Marklin modellers.

Hi Ian
great its happening
nothing ventured nothing gained
I spoke with one of the local Guys involved
with Our national convention about Ian Rice
has said he could get me his address and also
said that he has had some accident or fall
and is laid up for a 2 months but if you
wanted a special weekend speaker he is very
good , stayed on subject, kept to time
used a lot of overheads and visual stuff
and very dry wit but his scenery stuff Ian
is just great and he is into diaorama building
you would really enjoy him and I think he is
coming out here for another trip later this year
well great to see the interest building but sad
to read comments about "dealers not interested
in helping Clubs" where do they think their business
could come from eh well encouraging this sort of
grass roots interest is one of my pet interest Ian
so great logo design
have fun you guys
regards and best wishes for your club

Dear Forum,

I may have missed something here, and if I have then I apologise.

I have seen some reluctance to any future Marklin UK Club being run through this Forum, and indeed David Dewar suggests a Yahoo Group.

When the recent suggestion of a club was muted, I for one envisaged the club as being a 'real-life' social interface extension of this 'cyber-space' interface, rather than something that competes with the Forum. As a recent member to the Forum I have enjoyed the banter in the threads and the vast knowledge that some members have to share, and recently for four of us we have met at Ian's to chat face to face and to extend that online experience in the flesh. We post through Ian's page to keep everyone informed of what we are doing here in the UK, if you are not interested then don't read the threads.

Likewise, if we have a section or thread devoted to the club within the Forum, I fail to see why it would upset other Forum members like David because if you do not want to read about our news and antics you simply ignore the thread.

I for one do not want to split from the Forum, I do not want another website to go to (Yahoo or otherwise) as I see this counter-productive. I like the casual aspect of this Forum and cannot see any genuine reason why a thread cannot exist in here for the Club. This way all news information is still held in one place.

Whilst writing, I would also like to say my thoughts on the UK Club would be as follows;

1) I would not advocate any club layout or any club house (the intention is not to build the worlds biggest and best super club)
2) I would not advocate any annual membership. Can be open to anyone and everyone, visitors to the UK especially welcome
3) I would want the club to focus on the social side, meets, news, sharing information, arranging trips or seminars or the like (many good ideas have been voiced in this forum ). For example one meet could be at venue X, where part of the day is spent by Mr Y giving a hand's on tutorial on programming decoder chips, or changing them. Members could bring different locos and problems and people can see different ways to undertake conversions, or programming, see different (perhaps older and rarer) locos that have been converted, or reprogrammed. Then the remainder of the day can be spent running trains. Or like with the Greek club, they have different themes for each meet.
4) I would not propose any formal committee as such, but people could volunteer to get involved and organise things.
5) I am sure we would attract over time people who are Marklin fans but whom are not interested in the Forum.
6) It has been suggested that the Club should be open to all Railroad Modelers, and in principle as I have said it should be open to everyone but the main idea behind it should be the discussion and enjoyment of all things Marklin. I do not want the prospective Marklin Club UK to end up visiting and talking all things Hornby.
7) Club policy should be to do all it can to promote the hobby with younger generations.

I like the Greek club model, they seem to have been meeting since 2006, they have a thread in here, and instead of endless debating they simply get on with it.

Thanks

Glenn

Hi, I am just back from a fabulous week's holiday in the Algarve (4th time there). Sadly, I was in Albuferia where I could not find a local Marklin dealer. I believe the nearest is in Porto, which is about six hours on the train. I have just voted "Yes" to the UK Marklin Club. Anything which may give us members purchasing power would be a good move. Good luck with setting up your Marklin club guys. Here in NZ, the Wellington Marklin Club (www.mmrc.org.nz) has been going for over 30 years. That shows that it is possible. Users.net forum member Clapcott is our President, so I'm sure if you need help or suggestions, he would only be too pleased to help. Likewise mvd71 is the President of the Auckland Marklin Club.

Our club is a formal organisation, under NZ law we are an Incorporated Society. We have a Constitution, we hold annual AGM's, members pay a membership fee, and we have formal meetings every month at the Club's clubrooms. The Club is run by an elected committee of members, elections for which are held yearly at the AGM.

It sounds like you don't want to be as formal in your structure as that, but I guess you can start off by having a committed core of members who will show up and do stuff for the club. Once you've got that, then you can look at growth opportunities from there.

Hi Dave. Your club is indeed well run and similar to those here in Glasgow. I suppose all countries could have their own bit in the forum but that in my view defeats the purpose of an international forum. I am sure Spain and France and the USA could all have clubs here.
I did try a Marklin Club here a few years ago and we had 18 members but not enough to have premises etc which are essential for any model railway club as you have. They were too far apart to attend regular meetings.
To Have Peter as your president is great as the guy is a genius.
However the Marklin Glasgow lads (some two rail guys as well)will next meet at the Scottish model rail show in Glasgow which is quite good but mainly Hornby.
Anyday we will have the t shirts design and the copyright problems as discussed previously (help)

My problem with Clubs as a Banker is I end up Treasurer and at present have four on the go none of which are model rail but all sports clubs ... far to old these days so must give up.

David
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.
