Märklin 46350 Dump Car Set (with new mould "Ommi")

Hi all!

The new Dump Car Set 46350 includes four freight cars of the new mould "Ommi", one acid transport car, and one boxcar Gms.

Here the acid transport car and one Ommi:

Märklin made the dump car Ommi before - here old and new side by side:

The old Ommi was really tipping, but the new one has more and finer details.

Here once again old and new side by side (the old car could collide with platforms etc., but this shouldn't be a problem with the new mould):


The old one again (it has short couplers, but no guide mechanism):

The new one comes in two versions: with and without brakeman's platform (the set includes two of each type):


The acid transport car:

Three similar acid cars came in the set 46390 - if you want to make this train a little bit longer ...

The boxcar Gms (formerly known as "Oppeln":


The acid transport car and the boxcar run without problems.

The Ommi cars do not run freely, to me it seems the replication of the prototype brakes touches the flanges of the wheels.
We tried two sets at the dealer's and several other users reported this problem on Stummi's forum.

Update October 3, 2011:
Now I think the wheels touch the frame (see red ellipse) and not the brakes:

One user on Stummi's Forum reported that oiling that area does improve driving quite a bit. But I'm not happy with the idea of lubricating the insides of the wheels - the oil will move to the flanges, the flanges touch the frogs on turnouts leaving the oil there, other wheels will pick it up ...
I haven't yet tried to file the frame at that place.

The two sets are on my buy list. Interesting about the brakes on the Ommi.

These new Ommi types look very good. I hope the running problem can have an easy solution.

This set was on my list for this year, but it became a casualty of spending cuts in my hobby budget. I hope I dont get riots from my Preisers! BigGrin

Not quite sure what this question is about.

The text above the pictures indicates what you see on the picture (you can tell the old Ommi from the oversized metal handles).

The old Ommi is sold as #4635, but was also included in starter sets.
The new Ommi comes in the set #46350. This review is primarily about this new set, but I also took some pictures of the old one (mine is from a starter set).
The other cars are new (I don't have older moulds to compare them with).

Picked my set up from the PO today. A quick random check of two of the Kippwagens reveals the same problem with mine as Tom describes.Cursing So what do we do from here, let M know, send them back to the dealer Confused what Confused

Märklin TV episode 36 gives you the answer: some of the cars don't roll easily, but Märklin locos are strong enough to pull 'em.
So I presume they won't do anything when you send them back.

At least they admit that they made a mistake when creating the moulds. I hope they fixed it for the second set.

Agreed, it would be a nuisance to send them, back from NZ anyhow Sad , bit of a smug attitude to say there's a problem with our latest rolling stock construction, with foulling wheels, but because of the power of our Locos it's not a problem ThumbDown
Are you going to modify yours, with a file or the Dremel, Tom ?

I tried it with a knife, situation has improved. I guess I have to cut off some more material.
I thought about filing, but didn't dare to take it apart (yet). I presume it's only clipped together, but if you don't know where you have to spread it, you can easily break off something.
Dremel and melting plastic? May depend on the tool you are using, but I'd rather rely on manual operation (knife or file).

Nice pictures...
..I just have seen the 46350 on display...I didn't roll them.
At first glance I was not taken with these new "OMNI", excepted, may be, with the load of gravel . Anyhow..I booked them . I'll buy them. The prototype is nice, I like this type of wagons...
Do you know if there is a metal weight in the chassis of the "OMNI model ?
