I'm a big fan of Austrian trains. For me the combination of the fantastic landscape, the typical design of the trains and their great railway lines make them an ideal example for my MRR intrests.

In this tread I would like to discuss ÖBB trains in general.

I myself started to focus on öBB models a few years ago, triggered my John, Pietro and Mike.

These are the "OBB" models I have now: Rh 1010, Rh 1012, Rh 1020, Rh 1040, Rh 1042 (x2), Rh 1043, Rh 1044 tandem, Rh 1670, Rh 2043.

I've got a couple on order as well: Rh 4010 train set, Rh 1044, Rh 1822 (Jägernd.)

My favourite line is the Brennerbahn, one of europes oldest lines across the alps

Hello Rinus

Milady and I spent 10 days in Austria last year (3 in Salzburg and 7 in Vienna). We travelled from Zurich to Salzburg (via The Tyrol of course!), Salzburg to Vienna, Vienna to Eisenstadt and return and finally Vienna to Prague, and all by train. I must say that I was most impressed by the OBB. Oh, and the scenery and Gruner Veltliner were wonderful too. Since returning to Australia I have acquired quite a few Z scale OBB locos, coaches and wagons - I wish they weren't so rare and expensive!

The trains. Our train from Zurich was pulled from Buchs to Salzburg by a red Taurus and I was deeply impressed by the way it was able to pull such a long train up the steep hills and around the sharp curves. At Salzburg I saw a RailJet and a Hercules, not to mention various other trains and locos. The trip to Eiesenstadt and return (the Haydn Trail) was in electric railcars (type not known to me) and another Taurus took us all the way to Prague. What a fantastic run that is through the mountains on the Czech border!

Thanks for posting that great photo.

My wife and I went through Austria on the VSOE Orient Express for our 25th Anniversary, and the scenery through the Arlberg and Brenner passes was spectacular. I took some photos of trains, though unfortunately many were not very good quality as I was shooting through the train windows.

Hi Gary,

They were mostly taken in and around Innsbruck. Our train came down the Arlberg pass from Switzerland to Innsbruck, and then continued down the Brenner pass to Italy.

Must have been an amazing trip! Was it a Intercity (IC) or a nighttrain (EN)? I'd like to make the trip from Rome to Munich once. It goes straight over the Brenner. Drool

My favorite one is the Austrian Crocodile, I have the museums version, Rh 1089 in green, next one: Rh 1670, Rh 1245.
1016 from Märklin.
This is also among my favorite: Rh 1010, steamloco has to be BBÖ Rh 310.23

Hi Rinus

The trip from Zurich to Salzburg was on an EC, made up of a mixture of SBB and OBB coaches. A red SBB Re4/4 pushed the train to the Swiss border station of Buchs, where it was replaced by the red OBB Taurus. This loco pulled the train out of the station, across the Rhine, across the Grand Duchy of Lichtenstein and then on through the Tyrol to Salzburg.

From Salzburg to Vienna was on an IC. The trip from Vienna to Prague was on another EC, this time made up of a mixture of OBB, Czech and DB coaches. This train starts at Villach in southern Austria and goes via Vienna, Prague, Dresden and Berlin to Hamburg.

I see you rank the 'alltbau' loco's above the more modern ones John. Any paticular reason for that?

I myself tend to rank the Era III/IV loco's on top. The Rh 1010 - 1041 - 1042 line-up I find very characteristic with their box shaped design, slightly rounded corners, orange colour scheme and very large headlights.

UserPostedImage

My personal top 5 would be:

1. Rh 1010
2. Rh 1044
3. Rh 1042
4. Rh 1041
5. Rh 4010

Intersting thing about the öbb is that the loco's have a lot of different colour scheme's. I'm interested to know which colour scheme you prefer. Green, Blutt orange, the Vasoulek design, Verkehrsrot?

regards,

Rinus

Rinus,

My top loco always will be the 1089, its a true Austrian Croc and all other older locos.
The new ones is 1.) Taurus, 2.) 1014, and of course the 4010 I would like to get another one in the red-grey colour.

No particular reasons, just the old look of it. The green locos look good too but when compared with the Vasoulek & Verkehrsrot, they express a different outlook, they display a more vibrant and fresher picture and they have a domineering effect in the landscape, whereas the green colour blends in with nature.

I see what you mean. I prefer the blutt orange and green ones myself. The red ones are too dominante for my taste. Writing this down I'm suddenly reminded that i've got the blue/ivory coloured Rh 4010 on order and one Rh 1822 and Rh 1012 in my collection Laugh!

Do I understand it correctly that you have one Rh 4010 allready? How is it? I'm really looking forward to it. I've been waiting for quite some years for it to be re-issued by roco in this colour scheme

Regarding your taste for older öbb loco's, this paticular picture keeps coming up in my mind. The combination of 3 Rh 1245's and the heavy load behind it. Wonderfull. Too bad the Rh 1245 is rather expensive in 1:87, if else I'd try to get three of them for certain.

It seems long before actually going to the country itself in 1978, I greatly romanticized skiing in alpine Austria and the gliding down the channels of the Danube. Not only is the natural scenery and sharply peaked mountains stunning, to me it is the essence and best of all Europe since its frontiers have been crossed many times by adventurers and invaders leaving a culture that much richer. Must try the renouned "Sachertorte" which has a slightly controversial history.

My first electric locomotive #3036 [model of the green Austrian Series 1141 e~lok] was bought brand new before it was permanently discontinued, then christened "Selma" after my Viennese girlfriend at the time. Lost touch with her long ago, but the locomotive runs like it always had.

Thank all of you for sharing these photographs from the most desirable country in Europe, and important link on the route of the Orient Express...

I find the older electrics particularly interesting. The combination of an old timer locomotive and a modern paint scheme isn't one I've seen anywhere else. That steamer is very unique, too.

I've done some work on my recent purchase, ÖBB Rh 2070 109-1 from Liliput.

Alterations and additions:

1.) Railing:
I have completed half of the railing and copied it from a prototype.

2.) added a Roco 4 pin electrical coupling and on the other end a telex coupling

3.) changed bulbs to Led's

4.) modified the PCB

The loco will have a permanent carriage attached to it and ther carriage has also a 4 pin electrical coupling + another Telex coupling (Roco)
3
5.) ESU Lokpilot V 4.

I'm quite satisfied with the results, especially the railing, it is a fiddly job but turned out alright.

This time its a Roco (63582 DC / 69582 AC) ÖBB 1044 282-0, limited Edition with a children art design theme and it needed over 100 different individual printing stamps.

The loco consists of 2 different designs, one design was won by 5 year old Nino Zorzi of Wiener Neudorf and the other 12 year old Christian Jaritz of Graz.
The loco's design was initiated in 1998 by ÖBB, ORF Confetti-TiVi and Roco.
It was in regular service until early 2000.

There was another Roco Loco with advertising: Euro design: ÖBB Rh 1044 018-8, this loco was produced in 2001-2002.

At the time both locos had to be pre-ordered and been sold out at the factory.

That handrail must have cost you quite some time. Did you thought of getting the rail from a similar Maklin Strukton version?

About the two Roco 1044's: I like the first one. You have got these two?

I saw a Rh 2043 in similar design recently.

Rinus,

the handrails and buffers are available from Liliput-Bachmann, Germany as spare parts at a cost of Euro 8.15 and the freight charges are Euro 59.00.
People these days give you an amount of postal charges and if you query them they never answer you or you get an arrogant answer back. I've paid US $34.43 for a memory 6043 to be send from America to Australia.

Unless our postal charges are so cheap compared to overseas prices but if we can charge less for articles to go overseas why is it so expensive for them to send them to us, is there headwind all the time or do people think we've got more money than everybody else ?

I've decided to get the buffers at a cost of Euro 3.65 and postal charges of Euro 7.00.
So you work it out your self, adding a plastic railing, your postage charge jumps up to Euro 59.00.
It doesn'nt make sense to me.

John

That is indeed a lot of money spend on nothing John. Why is it that expensive? I shipped some packages to Australia, insured, for a lot less.

UserPostedImage

Wasn't there a railing on the train in the first place?

Its a handsome loco, I think. Very robust. We have the lengthed version here in Holland as well. They are now being put a-side in large numbers and being replaced by the multi-current BR189. The Austrians use there locomotives over a much wider time span. Any idea why that is?

Think so. My dad got it when he was a kid. I'll ask him.

I would be glad to give you the price, but I bought it quite a long time ago and I can't remember how much I paid it...

Since for years I do own several E1020 Gators (and a few E1141s too) I never made it to one
of those more modern E1043s (except for my black Swedish Rc3 #37416, of course).
Not until today my good dealer surprised me with this excellent E1043 set #37417 ...

What the plague indicates is, the Railway line from Schwarzach St.Veit - Bad Gastein (Health springs, Healing Gallery, Skiing) under the glorious Administration, His Exellency, Kaiser Franz Josef started in 1902 and was completed in 1905.

finally got my buffers from Liliput at a shipping price of Euro 3.45

Rinus, the loco cost me A$ 50.00 without the handrails and 2 buffers.
I've added the handrails, bufrfers, 4 pin electrical coupling and uncoupling device.

Et al.,

Big thanks to all posting here, very educational topic. I was looking at the Blauer Blitz photo below and noticed the BB on front of train with the
O below it.

Is this a play of words with the placement of the O? OBB?

Jeremy. the logo actually states BBO (Bundesbahn Oesterreich). This was later changed to Oesterreiche Bundesbahn (OBB) and finally to the current stylized logo.

This site shows the logos used by the Austrian Federal Railways: http://de.wikipedia.org/...rreichische_Bundesbahnen

An English version is also available, but does not display the logos: http://en.wikipedia.org/...ustrian_Federal_Railways

According to the site, the BBO lettering was chosen only because the Swiss Oensingen-Balsthal Bahn was already using the O(e)BB moniker. The BBO was taken over by the German Reichsbahn following the Anschluss in 1938. In 1947, the independent Austrian railroad reemerged. Around the end of the 1960s, the railway started using the name OBB and eventually the new symbol.

A model of the Blauer Blitz was available from Piko and also from Kleinbahn.

Regards
