Hi,

I built a bridge for a HO scale module, and it now features as a construction article in the Australian Model Railway Magazine. The article includes detailed plans on the bridge design.

If you would like a copy of the magazine, just visit this website, they will take overseas orders.

My website also features some information on the bridge.

Thanks Nev, John, Peter and Kenneth.

Yeah, well it's about the only thing I have done in my whole life that is a bit out of the ordinary.

That is apart from getting married (my wife is standing over my shoulder.) Laugh

Anyway, thanks for the bouquets.

Thanks for sharing that with us Kimball, and congratulations on your achievement.

I seem to recall that there is also a marklin-users thread on your construction of this bridge.

Hi David,

Thanks for that.

Yes it was in the Quiz section, something like where is this bridge found?
The model was about 90% complete at the time, and the photos used German engines and rolling stock.

Great bridge and congrats on getting published. Building things from scratch is always one of my favorite aspects of the hobby but here you have really done a wonderful job.

Thank you Chris,

Actually there are some really good examples of this type of bridge (ferro-concrete) on California Highways, designed and built during the 1920s.
Some of them are quite beautiful, many are now in use as secondary roads.
I quote :"California Division of Highways engineers designed and built dozens of them in the 1920s and 1930s. The prevailing philosophy of the era emphasized the need to build attractive structures on the remote, scenic stretches of state highway, with architectural details that would enhance the setting. The bridges' enduring beauty and serviceability attests to the good sense of these men."

See the Dog Creek bridge (in memory of Harlan D Miller, Engineer) at http://www.flickr.com/photos/80651083@N00/3130882452/

Kimball:

You are right about them being in California. When I travel to the most northern parts of California from my house I pass two very large spans that are along Highway 101 in the hear of Redwood Tree company. They used to serve as the main highway in the past and as you mention they now serve in a secondary capacity but are still very impressive.

Again your model looks very real.

Hi Ian,

Thankyou.

Well of course it is the Scots who have been at the forefront of modern bridge building, from the time that the English Army built many in the 1700s in the Highlands. In fact the guy who designed the original of my model, was a Scotsman born in Holestain, Dumfriesshire.

I think in medicine and in bridge building, the Scots are up there.

regards
Kimball

Hi Joe and Darrin,

Thank you.

It took 18 months to build it and set it into the module frame. The module building time was separate again, but I had buddies help with that.

If I counted up the man-hours, I guess it would be about 120 hours on the bridge.

Interestingly, the bridge recently withstood the largest torrent of water ever witnessed by Europeans in the Lockyer Creek. (Europeans have only settled in that part of Australia since 1830). It was only 14 feet below the deck, 10 feet higher than any previously recorded flood. The engineers at the Railways say the bridge was pushed 5 inches out of alignment in the middle span, and of course that created some cracking. That has been repaired using injected epoxy compounds, and since 28th March, the track is again carrying heavy coal trains.

The bridge was built in 1911, so in November, will have been in continuous use for 100 years.

regards
Kimball
