Went all out and bought an unused 37990 Big Boy. It runs just fine and I can control the lighting with f1-f4 commands at the loco address with 6021. I cannot get any sound out of the soundcard with any of the funtion keys. I have changed addresses and read everything on this forum concerning the 37990 and sound. Am I missing something here? Can I not control the sounds with the 6021?

I have tried with all DIP switches on 6021 OFF and with just #2 DIP ON. Same result. Loco is fine but no sounds. I've tried several different addresses. No luck. I have adjusted the volume control up and down. Nothing happens. I am wearing out the 37990 instruction book to find what I am missing.

Your expert help will be appreeciated.

To access f5 - f8 on the 37990 Big Boy, you need to do that via the alternate address. Basically, a 2nd decoder address is assigned to CV75, which you then dial up on your 6021, and use the function buttons f1 - f4 to access f5 - f8.

Usually, the 2nd address will be the next consecutive number after the loco address (I can't remember what it is factory set to).

If you can't find what the 2nd address is, you should be able to program CV75 with your 6021 and allocate a new address to it.

This applies to models with mfx decoder such as the #37993.

The #37990 has two decoders, each with a mouse piano.
One decoder is in the loco (default address 40), one is in the tender (default address 41).

A link to the manual (copy to the address field):

Tom,

Thanks for the manual link. I have the original manual and have worn it out looking for clues. I can not access the sound on the second decoder at any address. The manual isn't clear on the function of switches 9 and 10 in the second decoder. I assume they should both be OFF?
