In the last year or two Märklin has issued retro items from the 1960's/1970's in the blue boxes that were in use at that time. Some items (E03's come to mind) were newer technology items, but issued in a blue box, but other items are from the tooling in use in that period. This trend seemed to start in conjunction with Märklin's 150th birthday.

So far we have had

30159 SBB Ce 6/8 Crocodile - 1996 Insider Model
2009 Museum Car
2009 Magazine Club wagon kit 'Ford'.
28950 Le Capitole Set
30210 V200
00796 Tin Plate Coach set
37574 E03 Triple Set
37629 Union Pacific F7
30050 Br23
26490 Blue Bird Alco PA1 set.

We also had the 31859 / 31860 set of 3 Crocodiles, but they did not come in a blue box.

Are these items something you find appealing, and want to buy? Or do you see them as just another sales gimmick?

If you like them, which other items would you want to see Märklin produce. A 30470 Br44 perhaps, or maybe a 30150 Crocodile?

Personally i really do not like these boxes, i am not that old to be sentimentally attached to these kind of boxes, i really like the greenish colour of the first digital locos or sets, but since most clients of M are that old, i guess they will like it so M will continue to produce more overpriced items in these boxes...

I like the items, but prefer to get an original of that item on ebay. Mostly they are readily available and usually cheaper than the "replicas".

Hmm,

Interesting question. I simply wanted a cross section of Marklin items and I quite liked the idea of a few being in retro boxes. I got a couple of
items on your list but not just because of the boxes they came in. Added appeal I guess.

30210.
37629. (Didn't know about box).

(I would have liked the E 03 triple set but Madam had found out about a certain purchase of Kroc sets and was mighty unhappy to say the least. The colours of a certain room on offer are beginning to be mighty appealing).

I would have to say I would buy a 3015 Kroc though.

Cheers David, hope all well,

Jeremy.

Personally, I have no interest in older Marklins, even less so of these overpriced retro re-release.

I thought that the original Croc 31859 was a good idea, considering second hand value of these old crocs was sky high... but at the current rate, Marklin is really pushing its luck... 30210? 30050?
If I were interested in these older items, I would have bought the real thing for much, much cheaper (with equally greater sentimental value due to their age).
I'm not surprised if we see a 3008 replica next year.

I'd like to see Marklin to show that it is a company that looks ahead to its future (keep building better and better models), instead of trying to remind people of its glorious past.

I hate to think that this is a long term strategy, and I think to reuse your old tooling (technically: obsolete) is quite a distraction from continuing the Marklin "Innovation".

I really like the old art work. The fact that someone was paid to paint an item and give it something more than what a photo could depict is something special that does not exist today.
All though with today's highly detailed models I would want to see a real photo of it before I deiced to buy it.

I love them. I have a 30159 and would like to find a Le Capitole. Call me old fashioned. If I am not mistaken Lionel and MTH, javascript:insertsmiley('Love ','/forum/Images/Emoticons/msp_love.gif')both have made reproduction vintage loks and cars a big part of their business.

I like it that Märklin is putting out these models, though I would not buy the ones that are true replicas of older models such as the 3005, 3021 or the Capitole set. The replicas allow present-day digital railroaders to experience vintage Märklin without having to modify the original models. But I think the new models, the ones that were not released back in the day, that are most interesting. An example would be the Bluebird set - I love the packaging and the style of that model, but it is NOT a replica. Instead it is a new Märklin era-III model with lots of bells and whistles but they decided to package it in the style of era III, which is great. I wonder how many they'll sell though, I mean I can buy lots of other stuff for the 900 euros or so they charge for it....

Oscar, the Bluebird is a limited edition, limited (we think) to 999 units (although the Marklin Product database says 1999).

I'm not buying an item just because of the box. I'm buying it because I'm interested in the model.

A few years ago, an Italian firm produced heavily overprized replica boxes for older Märklin stuff, which were sold on model train fairs in Germany and the Netherlands. They finally had to stop the sale of their replica boxes due to copyright problems. I just wondered about people who were willing to pay 50 € or more just for a cardboard box with a styrofoam inlay....as there are many other things one can buy for that money....

Personally, I don't really care much about the box. I do remember the "blue boxes" from the 60's, but I'm only really interested in what's inside them.

Just as Damon, I not going to buy a train set (blue bird) because it's in a blue box, it's the model that interest me. Personally I find the blue boxes have a nicer design then the gray once, but box is a box BigGrin .

BigD - congratulations, my friend. Great poll on our classic blue boxes !!! ThumpUp
And since they are classic marklins with a soul *) of course I'll buy more than just two or three Laugh

So far: #30050, 30210, 37629, 37227, 00796, 45644 (M should add the wonderful box also to that Gator)
Wish list: #30470, 30480. And many more. Basically they could revive lots of their 1960s program ...

Gives 'em additional cash - and collectors of classics the opportunity of their life.

I'd love if M could go back to the blue boxes with the "speedy" graphic representation of the model, the modern stereotype white or grey boxes are just plain boring... And I love the big Märklin text on the boxes - then you know your are buying the "real thing"...

Would certainly be more visible on dealer shelves too... And much more "inspiring" maybe also to our youngsters...

John, seen through my old man's eyes - one reason for youngsters not to think the M products are "cool" is actually the boring packaging of today... If the boxes had been as imaginative as in the 60's, you get some kind of expectation by just looking at the box.

That feeling is certainly missing with the modern boxes of today, you see a white or grey box with some kind of sterile drawing or you see the wagon model itself through a plastic window...

The box design means more for mental advertising than you think...

Thanks Stephen. 1999 it is.

I think our Webmaster and Captain John have touched on why I like the blue box designs. Apart from being the boxes that Marklin came in when I was a kid (and not able to afford everything I would have liked), I think the graphics are way better than today's boxes, and are really classic pieces of Marklin art. Of course, the same graphics design was used in the catalogs of the 1960's. Also, for collectors, an item is worth more if it comes with a box (especially a mint box) than without a box.

Many people have a theme around which they collect things, for example, one member in our Marklin club likes to collect Marklin items made in 1952, as that was the year he was born. For me, I want to start a collection of items that is based around the blue box theme. So far all I have is a 3065 V60 and the 30210 V200 and the Marklin museum car from 2009. I also have some TEE tinplate and other tinplate coaches, which is not much, but it is a start.

So while I will not be buying the Bluebird set, I will look to buy the 30050 Br23 and maybe the UP F7. I'd love to get a mint 3047/3027 and 3048 in the blue boxes as well. And who knows what Marklin will (re) release in the future.

I think we can do with a new poll - "At what age exactly do others consider someone to be OLD"?

Reminds me of the popular bumper sticker seen on cars driven by spotty-faced little blow-hards with pubic hair glued on their faces.... "If it's too loud, you're too old" - I'd insult them back but they're not smart enough to get it.

(Someone will know a good come-back for that sticker by the way)

So for me, I'm YOUNG at 54, still think like an 18yo with the benefit of experience to guide my impulses.

I like the style of the replica Blue Box items, I don't have any yet, but I'd be happy to, especially the 10-coach set, 00796. I'd like to see a similar style freight set with popular wagons from the same era.

Cheers

Probably something to do with said spotty-faced little blow-hards with pubic hair glued on their faces not being old enough to see over the windscreen might be appropriate!

It seems that the 30159 Crocodile talked about in another thread also came in a retro style box.

Just love these blue boxes. Both old and the new retro-boxes.
But an old blue box in bad condition is not so nice i think.
So i prefer a new retro-box or an old box in nice condition.

However, i like most the blue boxes with the old M logotype
in capital MARKLIN. These boxes were made to around 1973.
The newer blue boxes with the new marklin-logo is not so nice.

NOTE: Some of the new retroboxes has the old colour style,
but the new marklin-logo. Not so nice. (Example 28590).

But some has luckyly "full-retro-style" with the old MARKLIN logoBigGrin

Look at these boxes and see the big different.

Overpriced? Yes I think.
Buy on Ebay used? No thanks, too many tarots, false, repaint & destroied. Unsure
After ten years of search I can say that Original items in good conditions, bought directly by the seller are rara avis.
So why not buy an "original old model by Märklin" new in box perfect?
However, to tell the truth, it isn't the same as an old item, that shoulders sixty years.
Different smell, and story, of course. Smile

Well, it's more like a kinda "hybrid" box - but much nicer with a graphic on the outer sleeve than plain white... The box "mechanics" is the nowadays one...

Even if the innards of a box is the same, with that plastic insert of today - I would prefer to just open a lid, and not have to pull the inner box out of the sleeve..

Blue box or bust has been my collecting attitude over the course of the last year, but maybe I should say tinplate or bust. My collection stems from the late 50's to early 70's. I am really just nostalgic for the Märklin that I grew up with. I initially looked at but decided I have no interest in digital, so now I try and locate what I am looking for through auction sites. You can still find some pretty good deals if you know what you are looking for and are patient. I have no interest in current Märklin items, retro or not. My father has purchased a few of the "new" white/gray box wagons and loco's and they just don't compare to the Märklin of old (for both of us), so much so that I am going to be selling all of our newer sets. I know that the details are much nicer on the newer units, but so what? I can't see any details as the trains are running by anyway and any guests that come by just see cool model trains. The other reasons to own modern would be for digital stuff, which (no offense) people seem to have lots of problems with. There is a certain satisfaction you get from setting up a complicated analogue environment and watching it work for you. Additionally, I like being able to troubleshoot an analogue loco on my own without having to involve any other parties. In the end though, the box matters not, just what is inside it. My .02 cents.

As an analogue operator I picked "I wish they never stopped making them". No, I'm not stuck in the past but I could not go thru the expense of converting to digital. I also wish that they had never stopped making the original catenary as well.

You can still get masts for the old style catenary, Electrotren make them, and you can get them from the Eurolokshop for $1.50 USD each. Electrotren also made the old style wires for a while (half of my catenary is Electrotren wires), but they are now making newer style wires, which they claim can be used with their old style masts.

Thanks for the info but yes, I already knew that and I bought 30x masts from them last year. They are OK and will get the job done but their (Electrotren) assortment of overhead wires is strongly lacking. Cheers,Peter

About the pricing of some of these items..
Yes, Marklin probably priced them with quite hefty profit margin - but it's probably also a necessity.

I think production cost of many of these items would've been higher than it is for them to produce the newer items.

We're talking about Marklin picking up old toolings that they haven't touch for probably as many as 40 years.
Since then, manufacturing process would have constantly evolve as they attempt to refine and maximize efficiency of production for your newest and latest products - which almost certainly means they're no longer compatible to how you did things 40 years ago.

Making room to re-introduce these old items thus also carried signifcant risk - which in turn demanded the higher price.
Now collecting C-Sine models.

David,

Thank you so much for posting that picture of 30159. That was very considerate of you and much appreciated by Carol.

I trust you have hot water bottles?

Jeremy.
