I'm putting together a 50s-60s nostalgia-themed layout using M track. I don't have much space (39x82), but I'd like to run a train of the tin express cars. I see from the late 50s catalogs that models 4006-4013 are 8" each. Can anyone give me some advice about these cars and what I should know if I'm buying them (which I'd likely have to do on eBay)? Thanks

You might consider MA 40661, Tin Plate car set. No lighting. However, if you purchase and want lights installed. I can advise. I have this set with installed lights. Very nice

If you think this set too long, just don't run the restaurant car - there is nothing in it anyway - it is bare. Just a thought

I guess that it all depends on what kind of locomotive you intend to run with your coaches. I would probably recommend the earliest livery of the DB Aum and Bum coaches:
The first class was blue, the second class ones were green. The coaches entered into service in the mid-1950s and could be seen on German and European rails until around 1968 when they were updated with new liveries (some) and with new numbering. The older ones are labelled A4um or B4um and the later versions were Am202 and Bm232

One other classic tin plate coach set was the red and beige TEE coaches (4055-4058) or (4085-4089) which represent post 1965.

This ebay seller is liquidating his father's (Dr Tom Catherall) collection, including a number of the tin plate coaches from Maerklin and Primex

Thanks for the various comments. However, I specifically am interested in the 8" cars, models 4006-4013, from the late 50s (as opposed to modern remakes, which also look to be longer). Any thoughts about those cars?

I like 1950's Schürzenwagen you mention, they made them 1951-57, they generally go by the earlier number scheme 346/x which is printed on the coach.

They are solid, well made and have a great feel to them, definitely from another era, and before my time...

Since most are over 60 years old now, condition is everything, prices go from $20 for rough 346/1's to over $250 for a pristine 346/6.

Most of mine have minor paint issues which for my budget was fine, I just wanted them run well, be enjoyed on the track and was not looking show models.

When buying on ebay look for items with good pictures that clearly show the condition from all sides to avoid being disappointed as many will have paint issues or rust which may not show if the pictures are dark or not clear. Take look at the sold listings to see what you can expect to pay, there are still bargains to be had if you look for them.

Cheers,
Gordon

The other tin plate coaches are 24cm, which is a little over 8", compared to an exact scale version which would be 30cm or 12" long.
