Three weeks ago from an auction I bought a 3005
The Loco is in very good condition, was converted in the past to Delta with 66031 decoder. (no original reversing unit)
It's working perfectly, with the limitations of the motor (SFCM) and the decoder (no functions etc).
Here are a couple of pictures of the loco
IMG_04481_resize.JPGIMG_04473_resize.JPGIMG_04484_resize.JPGIMG_04486_resize.JPG
I plan to convert the 3005 in Digital with HLA motor 60943 and mSD decoder and LED lights
I want the opinion of the forum if its right to do changes to the body and tender:
1. Add a smoke generator (need to drill 5mm hole in the smoke stack)
2. Add rear lights to the tender (drill two 3mm holes)
Do you think that the alterations will destroy the value of the 3005 as collectible item??
Generally I dont'n like to do any non reversable alterations to rare or limited edition models
Is the 3005 in this contision in this category
Thanks a lot
Costas

The loco is in perfect condition and for me it is not good to make holes to this nice classic. It is a not a high priced collector model,it is a common locomotive for many of us,but my opinion is that we have to respect the old ladies. If it was possible to make the upgrade without holes,no problem.Just my opinion.

Hi Costas,

The 3005 is not a rare or valuable loco, so if you want to experiment it's probably a good model to choose.

I have one of these but I've decided to keep it in original condition in analogue. Instead I've bought one of the more recent Br23 models, digital, mfx, sound etc, so I don't need to mess about with the old classic.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Nice loco, I have had one since day one, when it appeared in the 1950's.
One little word of caution when converting to the 5 pole high performance motor: the brush holders will probably interfere with the roof/sides of the cab.
Be very careful , use some solid insulating tape before frying the decoder!!
Also mine has now 5 mm LEDs front and rear. The effect is stunning, and the model suddenly looked very contemporary. Yes I had to drill.
But this loco in real life was used often like a tank loco and would be seen travelling "backwards" , so installing lights in the tender is justifiable from an operational point of view.
But Ray is right, it might mean a slight decrease in value if that is a concern to you...but do you really care?
Good luck with the conversion

Thank you my friends
for your valuable opinion
I know very well the value in money of the 3005 and other locos of the same category
So the question is not for the value in money but for the value of passion!!!!
Any way the economy of the conversion is against me
(30 motor+85 mSD +25 smoke generator + 5 LEDS etc =150 Euro !!!!)
But is the passion and creativity who pay for!!!!

I will start with the basics and on the way we see
I will inform you for the progress of the conversion

Thanks again all of you
Costas

Did you use cool white or warm white LEDs Jaques?

My gut feeling would be warm white ones would look better on an older type loco like this, cool white ones for modern locos with halogen headlights.

I always use Warm White LEDS for Steam Locos and I adjust the resistor value so that the light is not very bright.
For modern Locos you can use Cool White LEDs according to the Loco and the ERA
Here is an example of the difference between WW and CW.
On the left is a V200 3021 with WW LED's and on the right A Re 460 3751 with CW LED's

BR 189 has LED lights that look rather cold while other prototype locos have LEDs that look rather warm.

For old locos (steamers or era III diesel or electric) I would recommend "Golden Sunset" LEDs.
For other locos with light bulbs in real life I prefer "Sunny White" LEDs.

The so-called "warm-white" LEDs have a neutral white that is not like light bulbs.

Here's a comparison (light bulb in top right corner, warm-white LED in bottom left corner):
