Hi!

I bought a pack of water filling posts.. I´m building them now.. So far so good, but...

QUESTIONS:
I´ll have one or two by the loco station, but would it also be a good idea to have one by each station?
Where will the crane typically be placed at a station? After the platform, or just at the stopping Point of the loco next after the platform?

Regards / Martin T

Hi!

There were long train runs when steamers and diesel locos (V 200) took water while standing at the platform with their trains.
If you want to model that, the crane will have to be near the end of the platform. I think this was not typical.

Big steamers can run about 300 km with one load of water, so only few stations need water cranes at the platforms.

Tom

From old station diagrams I've seen it seems that most stations had water cranes in steam days. Don't forget the water towers that would have been needed to store the water to feed the cranes. They should be around the station somewhere too. Sometimes a water tower would have an integral water crane attached to it.

Large locomotives could carry enough water to last for many kilometres, as Tom said, so they did not have to stop for water at every station. Smaller tank engines would have to replenish more frequently.

The usual position I've seen for the water crane is just beyond the end of the platform, where the loco could replenish its tanks while the coaches behind it were still alongside the platform, allowing passengers to get on and off.

There would also have been watering facilities in shunting yards and freight stations to cater for shunting and goods locomotives. Obviously these facilities would also have been found in loco servicing yards.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

A couple more. I'm mentally designing the features of the station on my layout, this is of interest to me.

Referring to the station you are modeling - see screenshot.

Not too far from what I was planning ;) I wonder, are there any other "hidden" features in this diagram?

Slightly off-topic:

Interesting location of the outer platforms ("Bahnsteig") 1 & 2 - marked in yellow.
2016-05-24_16-13-00v2.jpg

The access track to the sidings on the lower left hand side is cutting right through platform 1. And there is a through track (no. 4) between platforms 2 & 3.

Justifies my plans! :) Also, the turntable/engine facilities on this station are a modeller's dream!

Perhaps on a slight spur from the original topic, in the US due to the great distances, sometimes water fills were located directly along mainlines, often filled by local water supplies. I have seen this practice in use at least by D&RGW, UP and newly Western Maryland. I am sure there are more. A couple of UP examples in the Sherman Hill area (the Big Boy being especially thirsty):

August 5th, 1956, Big boy 4024 above the new line above Sherman Hill.

Note the water tower in the distance (Aug 31 1958 - 4003 west near Dale Creek WY):
