During the '70's, South Africa had over 400 Garratts in operation...the largest collection of the type seen anywhere in the world...most of them operating on our standard (rather narrow) 3ft 6 inch gauge

Hi Joe,
In your first photo, the third (dead) Garrat was a different type. This one is being towed without its front tender.
It was called the Australian Standard Garrat because it was built under direction of an all-Australian committee around 1940.
They were allocated to the narrow gauge 3' 6" lines of Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland.

Operationally, it was a failure, for a number of reasons. http://users.nex.net.au/~reidgck/s-trains.htm

Thank you Carsten Cool

It is an ingenious system for the sinuous and narrow rails

To start going to build up speed they smoke a lot. When coasting the front one is just idling. In the last section of the video they are actually climbing a steep grade BigGrin

Hi Eddie,
I expect it was probably for show, as it may have been on an enthusiasts special, judging from the fact it seems to be hauling passenger cars.

Hi guys , I just purchased an NSWGR AD60 class 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratt from Eureka Models in NSW and it came yesterday. Its a beautiful model. It has light weathering with red lining. Im waiting for some 2 rail track I ordered to test it out. the sections are joined together with what look like 8 pin connecters so I would imagine that over time if you keep pulling the sections apart they will get loose. It also says not to try and lift the 3 pieces together. All in all it is about 18 inchs long. I wonder how that compares to a " BIG BOY ". Pictures to follow. Take care EddieCool Cool Cool
