Just wondering how much funds you have allocated for Marklin in 2016 (11 months remaining).

I have allocated a total of Euro 600.- for the next 11 months.
Money will go to 3 oldfashioned analogue loco's at Euro 100 each, some freight cars for total Euro 100,and one analogue loco in the more heavy class at Euro 200.
All for static display.

Cheers,
Paul.

Why just only purchase Märklin?
If you buy an ESU digital locomotive, you can now use all digital functions(21-23) with the new CS3,since this new digital system allows up to 32 functions.
Both M4 and DCC...
I´m not sure how much i shall spend on the trains this year.

Goofy,this is still a Marklin forum,i believe,so i am concentrating on Marklin.
You are entirely free to buy whatever you want,of course.
For me,i will buy Marklin analogue at acceptable prices, that explains the title of my topic.

Unfortunatly my budgetted expenses are the same as the last 3-4 years; 0 (zero) €.
-Although improvised adquisitions are allowed, for a value of up to -say- 500,- (not so fixed).
As with NS1200 I primarilly look for bargains with older analog locomotives and running stock.
Accessories and track could also happen, if f.x. I find some discounted items.
Looking for train-stuff is not a high priority though, and only happens ad-hoc. (And with brick-and-mortar shops getting more and more rare, chances are getting more and more slim. :-/ )

If you want CS3,you can always sell the old CS2.
The pricelist of the CS3 is now about 5600,00 swedish crowns.

Budget for Märklin.... hmmm.... I don't have any budget and I have spent way too much money to Märklin stuff since around 2010. I should try to be smart enough and spend less money for Märklin in the future. It's very difficult. Start for this should include to quit using eBay and close my account there.... Blushing

I may get the CS3 plus and a few locos.

I normally only buy locos to use on my layout to play with and not really too interested in collecting trains. With my small modest size layout I don't need too many trains.

I want to start experimenting with weathering of rolling stock this year, so that will probably cost a few wagons, as well.

I always had a keen interest in astronomy and finally took the dip and invested in an decent telescope for the family to use, so most I my hobby budget is already gone for this year...

I had my budget set on a big 0 as I moved house recently and besides decorating it, building up the layout again was priority.
But all good intentions went out the window when I entered a marklin shop last week and purchased a 36243 BR23 and some esu decoders to convert my remaining analog locs.

I still have back-ordered from '15 new items 610.- Euros. New orders for this year's new items are 665.00. I think that will be close to the

total but I'll seeConfused . Peter Cool

As in previous years I will try to limit myself to 3-4 new locos and a similar number of second hand locos, together with odd items of stock. I will try to fail less spectacularly than in the past....

Last year I bought 5 new locos and no less than 10 older second hand ones. I really must keep under control the impulse to buy all the bargains I see on ebay!

In terms of money I plan to spend between 1200 and 1500 euro, if I can keep to my planned purchases only. This would come to a bit over 100 euro a month.

Seriously speaking, while I, too, am curious about how much others spend on the hobby, I really think it should stay private.

The ones who have money may like to tell others how much they spend, but the ones who don't have much money may feel a bit envious.

For this reason, I will keep to myself what I spend; others can do what they think best, of course.

Besides, budgets are often broken, anyway.

Hi all,

I'm not rich or single, but I have a wonderful wife who does not interfere with my MRR budget. Smile In any case, she knows that I only buy good value for money now and that I often finance new MRR purchases by selling Märklin items that I don't want any more in my collection. When I run out of things to sell, I won't be able to buy as much.

Best regards,
Mark

You make a good point Silvano. However, I don't think anyone should be ashamed by how much or how little they spend on their hobby.

Most people go through phases in their lives when they find themselves with a bit more money on their hands, and certainly most also go through times of hardship.

When I had a young family, and my wife had taken time off work to raise them, money was tight and had to be prioritised. During that time I would buy maybe one Model railway item every two years, as a Christmas or birthday present. However if there was any money left at the end of the month it generally got put away for family holidays.

Today my kids have grown up and no longer rely on me financially, my mortgage is fully paid, and my salary is fairly decent, and my wife has a fairly good job too, so I can afford to treat myself more often.

I also balance my spending in comparison to what others spend on expensive cars, far flung holidays, smoking, drinking, eating out, etc, and find the balance in my favour!

Thanks guys,interesting comments.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Living is an expensive habit, especially when earning wages seems to serve one purpose only, keeping the tax office happy.
Difference between gross income and nett income is some 40 to 50 percent overhere.
An item of 10 Euro can bring more pleasure that an item of 400 Euro.
Saving money can be a sport.
No more alcohol means a saving of 100 Euro's per month, alcohol is heavily taxed.
Bringing lunch from home is very common in The Netherlands, costing a fraction of having lunch outside.
We do very selective grocery shopping.
We do not buy clothes we do not need, byebye to the glossy fashion world.
We bring the cars to a local garage for maintenance, saving 50 percent as compared to the official dealer.
And so on,and so on.
Keeping a budget will keep you on a straight track and tells you that you are overspending, same thing as done by companies.

I know people who earned fortunes on the stockmarket when it was still good.
Big houses,big cars,big boats.
Fine with me,it does not bother me at all.
I once visited the grave of farao Toetanchamon in Egypt,he tried to take with him the golden treasures collected in life,to no avail, they are still in his grave, for us to admire.

Going into retirement in 7 years time,i might buy that Big Boy then afterall...........

Enjoy your trains,great and small!

I have "allocated" in my head a sum of £500 this year on three "capital items". This is very modest considering my expenditure on M items during the previous twenty years had been zero. However I guess I am kidding myself really since digging into the loft and getting restarted last September I have bought no capital items however if I add up all the bits and bobs - fried K83, couple of bits of track, an ebay turnout, a few bits of wood, that ebay bargain, brushes, bulbs and traction tires and my currently awaited tiny pot of liquid graphite (£3.64) & etc etc etc - I recently looked and had spent £300 on these things yet you can't really see anything on the board so I don't include them in my "budget" and we all know they will continue.

Well since the boss found the insurance spreadsheet when the renewal arrived last week and discovered I have over $60k worth of trains (conservatively) my budget for anything train related has become zero.

Then again she is moving up with 2 of the kids to be a child minding service and leaving me to sort out and sell the house so who knows what will transpire Cool BigGrin LOL
Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

Hi
Budget - my new purchases are determined by track, I dont believe in cabinets so all rolling stock must fit on the track and I am running out of track !
Therefore new purchases will have to be small this year, as I can't find anymore ways to expand the layout.

Hi all,

My budget will be quite small for this year. Propably I will buy second hand items from eBay
consisting BR52 condens tender and some era III coaches and wagons.

11.2. I will hear if my cancer is cured. If it is I will buy me a new Heckler & Koch MR223 A3 rifle Drool
which explains why Märklin budget is so small for this year. Lets hope for the best.

I have no fixed budget. I do try to limit myself to Epochs I & II Bavarian or Swiss. I am also looking at other manufacturers (Roco and Brawa). I am looking to buy more on E Bay and more used pieces. I find there are substantial savings and my experiences with E Bay have been good (even better than Amazon in terms of fast shipping and reliability). I have always been fond of Marklin but the constant lack of availability in the US is wearing thin on me (especially new items). Dealers here are constantly on back-order and I believe a lot of this is manufacturing faults. My budget will be around $3-4K(USD) as I am looking further my layout so costs and will be more track etc as opposed to engines and running stock. My other budget, E Bay, will be $2.5K(USD) for buildings and used locos (especially electric locomotives). These figures mean little after seeing some gem on a website!

I am set at $1000USD. About $750 of that is going to new items already. (C 5/6, SBB diner and log car sets)

My rule for some time now (which is no fun but effective), is that any dollars beyond the budget/amount above means selling something I already have to make up for it. Hence my always having some odds and ends for sale on the forum. I have to say the system works though, I haven't run out of space, and I haven't hit the personal finances too hard as a result of it.

11.2. I will hear if my cancer is cured. If it is I will buy me a new Heckler & Koch MR223 A3 rifle Drool
which explains why Märklin budget is so small for this year. Lets hope for the best.

Cheers

Åke

Ake,i sincerely hope you will get good news about your health!
The rifle looks top of the bill,be careful with that toy i would say.
My dream is to own a M1 Garand, not for shooting, just to hang on the wall:

Interestingly enough, the 1940tees Garand has the same NATO calibre (7.62 mm) as the FAL rifle i was allowed to use during my army time in 1976/77.

P.S.: rifles are meant to kill other people, something you do not want to happen, surely.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

M1 Garand is on my wish list too. Legendary rifle.

And I have 100% same opinion about their use as you have ThumpUp

Cheers

I see there is a shared pain around the world caused by our weakened currencies (Americans are the exception). Similarly, there is disproportionate lust for expensive locomotives and CS3's. I find, and hope all of you do too, a great deal of pleasure in items that come in the smaller packages. A finely detailed wagon, especially if equipped with a metal chassis, provides an almost equal amount of pleasure as a locomotive, for a fraction of the price.

I intend to buy a couple of buildings only. The engines in the showcases need to be driven. So no ebay or ricardo this year.

I think you make a very valid point.

I believe a lot of the pleasure is in getting something new. I have been just as exited at receiving an old wagon from ebay as the latest locomotive from this year's new items! Of course I don't value them at the same level, but the joy of ownership is not always related to the price.

Something everyone should try: Buy an old wagon that need some attention for a few euros. Replace anything that may have broken off that can be replaced, like buffers or couplings. Touch up any flaking paint. Photograph it and post the photo on this forum. I guarantee you will be as proud of it as you were the last time you posted a picture of a new loco!

Ray,you are fully correct!

My "modest" wishlist for the next 11 months (excluding the ever wanted M1 Garand rifle and Mercedes GLK) is as follows:

3111/3168/3184/3302/4703/4727/4736/47760-06.

The 3111 and 3168 i owned before,and sold them.

I need to take into account some obstacles on the way: our wedding day,my wife's birthday, and Eurospoor (Utrecht,28/29/30 October 2016).
Apart from that,i am a free man, happy as Larry!

I usually spend close to double from I planned... The good point is it has not increased in the last years. It didn't decrease a lot too...
Last year bought 6 locos and sold 1. Also bought 3 wagons sets.
Let's see what happens this year...

Best regards,
Miguel
