I want to add a steam sound unit to my Marklin 3318 Loco. It currently has a 6090 decoder unit installed with the 5 pole DCM. I looking for info as to what I need to get and maybe some pointers on how to install the new electronics and speaker. I have a general knowledge of electronics and soldering equipment to make the needed connections. I kinda confused as to what decoders are available for the Marklin system. I'm currently using a 6021 Control but plan to upgrade to a MS2 in the near future.

Thanks for any help and advise.

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

All you need to do is replace the 6090 decoder with one of the new Marklin 60985 (Steam) sound decoders and find room to place the speaker, probably in the tender.

So Ray, all I need to do is remove the 6090 and install this unit and find a place for the speakers. I take it that there's a way to set the loco's address?

Do I need to use both speakers? Would this give me the sounds that the current Marklin loco come with? (chug-chug, whistle brakes etc.)

Thanks,
Chuck

If it already has sounds in it I don't believe it has a 6090 decoder. It sounds like it has an ESU Loksound decoder in it.

Yes, the loco would have the same sounds currently available on new sound-equipped locos from Marklin

The locos address can be accessed by your 6021 and changed if necessary. The instructions would be in the manual. If you upgrade to a MS2 then you don't need to set the address as the new decoder, being mfx, would register automatically on the controller.

No Alan, it currently doesn't have sounds.
