The national railways of India have very recently concluded the purchase of a total of 1,800 new locomotives.
General Electric of the USA will supply 1,000 units type Evolution diesel-electric loco's.
Alstom of France will supply 800 units type KZ8A twin coupled electric loco's.
Total amount involved is USD 5.6 billion.
The first batch of each loco will be imported as complete ready to go units.
All the others will be manufactured locally in specially build plants.
The deal also includes construction of maintenance depots and extensive training.

India is coping with an aging railwaysystem going back to the days of English design.
With a vast population and railways being the main source of transport over long distances,it is time to scale up modernisation.
What i can digest sofar is that the new locomotives will be used on the eastern freight corridor, hauling trains of 6.000 tons at 100 km/h.

If Marklin could only enter this huge potential market..............

The Alstom locomotive, turning out 8,800 kW equals 11,964 HP:
