Hi all, I see Roco have introduced factory fitted sound to their SBB Re460, how does this model compare to the versions by Hag and Marklin? Cheers Rob

Hi!

I have a Re 460 from Roco, but without sound and bought a few years ago.
This pictures shows HAG, Roco, and Märklin (left to right):
Re460x3.jpg
My HAG loco still uses light bulbs - current models use LEDs. Closed front skirt for HAG loco must be bought separately, Roco and Märklin include it.
My Märklin loco still uses yellow LEDs - current models use white LEDs.

I think the detailing is nice with all three locos, but Märklin paid very little attention to the interior details. The Märklin model comes with DB pantographs - the photo shows narrow wipers that must be obtained separately if you want them.
Regards
Tom

The Roco Re 460 is a nice model. I have a few of them. One of them has a ESU Loksound with the sounds for the Re 460 installed. It was relatively easy to swap the Roco ESU OEM decoder for the Loksound one. The new factory equipped Roco sound models have a ZIMO decoder with a very nice selection of sounds.

A few things to consider. Overall, Hag had the best models of the Re 460.
For some strange reason, Roco decided to offer the handrails as separately attached pieces.
The Maerklin model has a different dividing line between chassis and shell that allows for light to seep between the shell and the chassis near the lights. Some models are better than others.
The Roco model will be the first to offer the Faiveley pantographs that SBB has been using for a few years.

If you have the funds, a Hag loco will probably give you the best model. There are some shops that still have some of the old production (analog) in stock. The easiest way to convert one to AC digital is to buy a DC version and then add the slider and AC bogie/axles separately. Hag AC digital models can still be found, but often at high prices.

I am in the market for a Re 460 with the new pantographs. The model has to have the red livery without the 2000 on the locomotive ends. An added plus would be if the model offered the choice of 3 x white 1 x white, 3 x white 1 x red or 3 x white 2 x red for lighting.
I was considering exploring whether the Faiveley pantographs for one of the TGV POS or Lyria models could be installed on a Maerklin Re 460 instead of the OEM pantographs.

Thanks guys, I do really like the Hag models but collecting the bits together to convert one to digital is a bit of a nightmare here in the UK. What caught my eye was that Roco are looking to do the "Migros" livery as I am not convinced that that the new Hag Company have fully got to grips with quality control yet.
Here in the UK we no longer have any Hag Dealers, just two selling off residual stocks and for all intent and purposes it's the same regarding Marklin with only Gaugemaster listing a handful of items.
However there are a few high street Roco Dealers who also carry AC Loco's which is a big attraction.

Digital here is a total joke, there are lots of Digital Specialists here, apparently fitting a Bachmann chip into a DCC ready Bachmann Loco allows you to call yourself a Digital Specialist, mention Marklin, Hag and ESU to them and their knee's start knocking, "I don't know about them foreign thingys, you need to talk to someone else" and that includes the ESU importer here in the UK. It's a bit like computers 20 years ago, many clueless prats claiming to be IT specialists because they were unlikely to encounter someone who really was one.
Even if you could collect all the correct bits together (probably from mainland Europe) you would then be sending everything in a box back again to Europe to get the job done, hoping that nothing gets lost in translation, or the post.
Hopefully you can see the appeal in an off the shelf 3 rail loco equipped with sound, cheers Rob
