Hi

I am keen to get Marklin Ae 610 Cargo loco that comes with the recently introduced starter set 29484. I am wondering if I can swap out the Marklin decoder with ESU Loksound V3 M4 decoder which I can obviously program for additional sounds. My friend tells me that the loco comes with a 21-pin decoder which should be pin compatible with ESU Loksound decoder. I am not sure if the decoder output is compatible with the fitted loudspeakers.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Cheers,

In my experience, you have to be careful when replacing an OEM decoder with a new one. Although they might share the same 8, 21 or 22 pin connector, I have encountered at least one situation where the pins were not wired according to industry standards and functions could not be assessed or the model did not work properly other than with the decoder that it came with. That particular issue has since been resolved.

The ESU decoder will fit mechanically, but may not be electronically compatible.
You should find out if the original decoder has amplified AUX3/4 and if the loco uses them.

The impedance of the speaker will be low (around 4 through 8 ohms) and will kill the sound output stage of a V3 M4 decoder. A V4 M4 decoder can handle those speakers, but the AUX3/4 problem also exists.

Hi! Tom,

From the looks of it, Marklin has not changed the inner of this all-time favourite loco compared with the ones with Digital decoders that they have produced in the past 7 - 8 years. I am surprised that they still offer the arcane light bulbs instead of the LED lights. My suspicion is that they changed the speakers to the newer ones with 4/8 ohms which is why I raised the query. Hopefully someone in the forum has more insights on the technical specs.

I doubt if they are using the AUX3/4 because they have not added any new functions compared to the first digital Ae 6/6 that came out of starter set #29850 back in 2004.

Thanks again for your advice.

Cheers

Current Märklin sound decoders (red, green or white board) use speakers with 4 or 8 ohms. A new speaker is required anyway.
Still single light bulbs? Then there shouldn't be problems with AUX3/4.

AFAIK Maerklin has not changed the design of the frame since the 29850 model. The models with sound decoder and speaker include the following:

29463 Ae 6/6 "Neuchatel" (red)
29850.1/29851.1 Ae 6/6 "Arth Goldau"* (green)
29680.1 Ae 6/6 Luzern (green)
29814.1/37437 Ae 6/6 Baselland (green)
37360 Ae 610 "Landquart" (Cargo)
37361 Ae 6/6 "Vaud" (red)
37363 Ae 6/6 "Erstfeld" (Cargo)
37362.1 Ae 6/6 "Schwyz" (green)
37362.2 Ae 6/6 "Langnau im Emme" (red)
39363 Ae 6/6 "Olten" (red)

* The 29850/851 was delivered with OEM ESU mfx loksound decoder.
I believe most of the other models were delivered with Maerklin's post-ESU mfx sound decoder.
The 37361, 37362 and 29680 models were released in 2007 and coincided with the end of the ESU - Maerklin collaboration.
I do not know if they have the ESU or Maerklin sound decoder built in.

The only difference in each of these Marklin Ae 6/6 models, with the exception of #39363, is the use of 4/8 ohms impedance speakers in the newer ones. The wiring and the PCB board have been exactly the same. I am not sure when Marklin switched from the older higher impedance speakers to 4/8 ohms speakers. I have done a simple swap of Marklin's decoder with ESU LokSound V3 M4 (mfx) decoder which worked just fine in #37361, #37362 as well as #37363 (Cargo) loco models.

Tom is right that the newer low impedance speakers will damage the V3 decoder and one would need to use ESU Loksound V4 M4 decoder instead, but then the question is worthiness of a few additional sounds for Euro 100+.

Best regards,

Rajnish

The 39363 is a 2015 Limited model for a Swiss Association and is equivalent to the 37360 or 29484 in all aspects except for the fact that the locomotive is painted red.

It does not have a Sinus drive and should not be confused with the 39361.
