Dear All,

My Primex version of the 3048 series 01 Pacific refuses to run after static display.
The lamps are working, there is a buzzing sound, nothing moves.
I suspect that the drive gear is stuck due to waxing of lubricating oil.

I took off the metal upper part,no problem.
Two small screws can be seen, one on the brush shield and one at the back of the motor.
Can i open both?

What is the best way to clean the motor and gear wheels please?
I donot want to cut soldered cable connections.

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

It can be taken apart by taking off the two screws on the side of the motor but remove the two brushes on the side first. Should not have to remove any wires. Lighter fluid will work as a cleaner. However when you mention the buzzing sound it may be the reversing unit is stuck. Try pushing on the unit to get it working. You may need a new spring (maybe it is missing). Good luck-Fred

Thanks Fred,

I might take it to the nearest Marklin shop just to be sure.

Hi Paul, Remove the brushes and then there are two screws on the brush plate. One at the top left and one at the bottom right.

ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

can you rotate the drivers with your thumb after removing the brushes? occasionally i have seen them prevent the armature from moving, but if not you will have to remove the two screws and gently lift the brush plate to remove the armature. it is not necessary to cut or remove any wires. remember; only lift the brush plate enough to allow the armature to wiggle out (with tweesers). you cannot bully it. then you can clean the gears with a mild solvent and compressed air (50 psi should do) and watch your eyes. when you put it all back together go easy with the oil. overlubrication is not good either. mikey

Buy a can of CC cleaner and spray the whole unit, this product is safe to use on Plastic and wiring and cleans of all the built up gunk. then either use compressed air to clean or let it dry natuarrly then lightly iol gears .

I have tried above during a few conversion project when everything is apart.

It does an excellent job of cleaning and will be sparkling clean. However on 3 occasions I have ended up with noisy, squeaky gears afterwards and in one case gears wobbling afterwards. Despite giving them adequate lubrication afterwards.

For electrical stuff and cleaning of solenoid so etc I would recommend it. For mechanical stuff like gears I would not. Instead use a mild cleaning solvent and then blow dry with compressed air.

By the way I believe Marklin use ultrasonic cleaning bath when they have to service old locos.

I use warm water and dishwashing soap for gears and mecanichal parts. But you'll need to remove all wiring and electric parts first.
Best regards.
Luis.

Paul; never forget to clean out the armature segment gaps with a wooden square type tooth pic. as the brushes wear down the residue will accumulate in the electrical gaps. the residue is conductive and will "short out" the armature. it will refuse to move when energized. mikey
