Our national railways NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) have requested four parties to tender for new intercity trains.
The four parties are: Siemens,Alstom,Bombardier, and Stadler.
Request is for total 30,000 seats, with an option to total 80,000 seats.
Service speed will be 200 km/h.
Trains need to be suitable for two power systems: 1,500 volts DC and 25,000 volts AC (25 KVA).
The DC option will possibly be upgraded to 3,000 volts.
Trains will have two safety systems: ATB and ERTMS.
Trains will run on the domestic network as well as on the Highspeed track between Amsterdam and Brussels.
Tendering needs to be finished in 2016,trains need to be operational in 2021.
It is expected that the Koploper intercity trains and the Traxx driven Highspeed trains will be outphased around that date.

No comments have been made about a possible upgrading of tracks for the higher service speed, which is now 140 km/h for the Koplopers.
Neither have comments been made about signalling systems and overhead current lines.

Koploper means freely translated "Frontrunner".
ICNG stands for "Inter City New Generation".

Exciting times ahead!

Makes me think in a wave of wild fantasy: throw in a retro version of the DB E 103,perhaps with a new cockpit.
These magnificant machines were running a daily service speed of 200 km/h in the late sixties, that is 45 years ago!
