Hi

I am contemplating building a new section on my model layout with automatic block signaling. I am newcomer to this and I would appreciate some hints and tips from experienced persons.

This is my key concerns:

  1. How many blocks?
    a. One per intended train running on the same track?
    b. More / less blocks?
  2. Block length?
    a. The same as the maximum train length running on the section?
    b. Other?
  3. Block separation and signalling
    a. Should blocks lie “back to back” or be separated by shorter signal controlled stop and go sections?
    b. Will stop and go sections allow shorter train distances instead of stopping traffic on an entire (longer) track block?

Background information.
I want a circular section with a total track length at 6-8 meters (19-26 feet). Maximum train length is 1,3 meter (4.2 feet) with 2 maybe three trains running simultaneously. I will build the solution with Märklin Central Station 2, S88 sensor and sensor tracks (K-tracks), Viessman 5211 digital decoders for my Märklin “legacy” signals.
Best regards

For modeling purposes, one needs one block more than the number of trains on the track. Prototype practice has trains separated by at least one block, but for modeling hardly anyone has that much space! Since there are no real safety issues involved , one extra is enough.

Blocks should be at least two train lengths long to allow for differing train speeds IMHO.

Intermediate short blocks are not necessary.
