@D.A.

I don't recognize the red decoder. Is that the 37324? I haven't opened mine yet.

@Dan

There are some design differences between the 37320/321/323 (basic sound) and the later 37322/324 (full sound) and possibly even more with the new 37325 (mfx+and full sound).
If you need a photo of a specific model, please let me know and I will expose the innards for you.

Regards

Standard Märklin mfx decoder (they come in red and green, NEM-compatible and not NEM-compatible). The decoders on the pictures are NEM-compatible and can easily be replaced by ESU decoders (or a Märklin MSD Spezial).

I have not checked my 37324, but all of my other Maerklin loks with similar 21 pin decoders all came with green circuit boards. Does that mean that all of them are not NEM compatible and cannot be substituted by other brands?

Green, red, and white decoder boards seem to exist. None of my 200+ locos came with a red one.
Could it be that the red ones are M* repair/replacement items?

No. The red ones are just newer batches. The white ones are mfx+.

Thanks for the information about the colour of the decoders. I guess that my 37325 will have a white decoder then.
I will have to check my 37324 to see if it is green or red.

I wouldn't put too much store in the colour of the decoder, as this can change from batch to batch, depending on where the circuit board manufacturer sources the blank PCB material, and even material from the same blank material supplier will vary in colour.
