Hi
It is 40 years since the last steam hauled expresses were operated by the DB in Germany.

On 31 May this was commemorated when the Schnellzug D 735 was re-enacted with a 10 coach train, fully booked and hauled by 012-066-7.
(With thanks to Alan Rees on the Railways of Germany forum).

HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

Wrong.
It was the last steam service on an express passenger train in Western Germany. Steam service continued two years longer for freight trains in Western Germany.
And much longer for all sorts of trains in Eastern Germany.
Regards
Tom

Hi Tom.
Wrong.
The focus of the article is on D 735. It ran in Germany.

Kimball

At that time there were two Germanies. The article is about the richer part of Germany that could afford to get rid of steamers much earlier than the other part.
D 735 may have been the last steam-serviced express train of the Bundesbahn, but it was not the last steam-serviced express train in Germany.

Hi Tom,
True.
I am not attuned to the cultural sensitivity which Germans show between east and west, which is entirely understandable.

Kimball

Hello Gents,
Any idea when the last regularly scheduled train would have been in either the East or West Germany? ... and if so which one?
Thanks for the extra details and corrections
Mark

DB DR FS NS SNCF c. 1950-65, fan of station architecture esp. from 1920-70.
In single point perspective, where do track lines meet?

The last regularly scheduled steam train in West Germany was hauled by 043 903 on October 26, 1977.
The last regularly scheduled "Eilzug" with a steam loco was E 3265 hauled by 012 063 (May 31, 1975).
The last regularly scheduled "D-Zug" with a steam loco was D 714 hauled by 012 081 (May 31, 1975 - a bit earlier than E 3265).
Source: MODELLEISENBAHNER 7/2015. According to MEB May 31, 1975 was the last day of regular steam express trains west of the iron curtain.

IIRC then DB translated "Eilzug" with "express train" and "D-Zug" with "qualified express train".

The memorial train "D 735 reloaded" was hauled by 012 066. On May 31, 1975 this loco 012 066 was hauling D 715.
BTW: On June 23, 2012 the loco 012 066 had the honour to haul IC 2332. This was a regularly scheduled train, but steam operation was not scheduled and was the informal solution to get out of dire straits.

I don't know when the last regular steam train ran in Eastern Germany. But when Deutsche Bundesbahn was united with DR, the latter brought several steam locos into the marriage. While not all of those steamers where still in active service, they were at list listed as active locos.
Regards
Tom

There is a topic in the German Wikipedia about this:
https://de.wikipedia.org...tze_von_Dampflokomotiven

According to Wikipedia, the last regularly scheduled standard gauge steam train in Eastern Germany was hauled on October 29, 1988 by 50 3559-7 (it was a passenger train, not an express train P 8447 / 8448 / 8457 Halberstadt - Magdeburg - Thale - Halberstadt). A reserve of standard gauge steam locomotives was kept operational until the end of the DR.
Steam operation on narrow gauge never ended AFAIK.

Wikipedia mentions that 044 377 was used as a heating locomotive until January 17, 1979 - but it only moved inside the BW and never hauled trains on free track.
