A private steam train en route to the Gotthard line yesterday:

The nicely arranged consist can more or less be reproduced with rolling stock from Liliput-Bachmann.

Some nice filming there.

I did like the juxtaposition of the steam train with the Crossrail double headed freight in the fourth scene.

Just beautiful.
The Gotthard is simply at its best in the spring.
The weather also seems to have cooperated.
The nicest 1:1 gauge model railroad in theBigGrin Wub world!

Hi
Thanks for the link to the private steam trip.
Very good filming which emphasises the railway as part of the landscape.

I have two questions.
1. Do the Swiss lines keep to the left, as in France?
2. I wonder if there is an ambient temperature at which the exhaust invariably condenses to white? It must have been a warm day, as the exhaust is quite colourless.

regards
Kimball

Generally yes. However there are quite a lot of lines where the signalling system enables an automated change-over mode, and so you can often see trains on the "wrong" Wink track. Many/most/all sections of the Gotthard line are equipped in this manner.

Not really prototypical, but you could perform such parallel running on your layout:

Apparently, there was a problem with the steam train because the Ae 4/7 helping at the end was suddenly no longer able to do her job, and thus the German steamer had to pull the entire consist!

Two SBB C 5/6 steamers (prototype of the Marklin model) double heading an excursion train on the Gotthard line last weekend (and a third steamer of the B ¾ class pushing at the rear):

Very nice.!
I see events like this as a positive development made possible by the opening of the new base tunnel.
For any Swiss RR enthusiasts the new tunnel will probably be felt as a loss, since the days of plentiful spectacular traffic are forever gone. So we'll have to wish for more of trains of quality like these.
But the days of a casual "let's spend a couple of days along the Gotthard" are definitely over.
Cheers
Jacques
