I just bought a "Plastoy" HO kit off ebay. It is called a Waldbrunn station kit I believe (Actually 5 pieces, station, loco shed, diesel tank, signal tower, misc). It looks very much like Faller, is this a company Faller took over? I'd like to find more of these as they aren't just a single piece but a collection.

Yes, Plastoy was made by Faller for the Aldi supermarkets.

Maybe you wouldn't like them. The Märklin locos sold in ALDI kits have the nickname "track warts" (Gleiswarzen).

Ah... so just how did they get that name? I mean some of the Primex stuff isn't all that bad, but I do have one piece of Primex that puzzles me.

AFAIK the name Gleiswarze came up for the new V 60 on the frame from Thomas the tank engine. No jackshaft, evenly spaced axles, the proportions of the body look odd.
UserPostedImage
But it seems there was a Faller tank station included in the starter set, so this loco is not completely off topic.

The ALDI starter sets from this winter didn't include Faller kits and the locos looked better than that V 60.
They came with a new controller: No more IR, no more F1 through F4, just F0, faster, slower and reverse.
See here:
http://www.weltdertechnik.de/technik/marklin-eisenbahn-startpackung-hofer-angebot-ab-29-12-2014-und-5-1-2015-kw-1-kw-2-kw-3
Loco has two axles and not even the buffers are separately applied.
Well, you can't lose the controller and you don't need batteries.
I'm afraid many buyers of these new starter sets won't get a good impression of Märklin quality.

Tom

Primex hasn't been seen in supermarkets for many years now. I think Tom is refering to recent cheap and toylike models found in the Aldi sets. In particular there were models of the V60 and the Br89 adapted to fit a chassis with much larger wheels, similar to those found in the "Thomas" locos. There was also a model of the Br80 recently which didn't much look like the real thing!

Mark, can you tell us about the Primex model that puzzles you?

Primex has not been in production since around 1991/92, apart from two special locos that were produced to keep the Primex brand name registered. Unfortunately Marklin has not kept up this practice. The locos have catalogue numbers 30031 (3003 Br24 in grey/black 'photographic' paint scheme) and 30055 (remake of the Marklin 3005 with Delta decoder).

I dont find anything wrong with Primex products and as far as I can see are the same in quality as the equivalent Marklin products. The only thing I do hate are the crap plastic box they used. Every time you open one theres a danger it will break.Apart from that their fine in my humble opinion. Take care Eddie BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

Hi Eddie,

Totally agree about the horrible boxes! BigGrin

Some of the earlier Primex models were very simplified versions of the Marklin product. For example a couple of locos have a missing axle, such as the Marklin 3029 with only two instead of three axles, and also the DHG500 was originally made for Primex with only two axles. These omissions were corrected in later models.

The final few years of Primex production gave us models which in some cases exceeded the standard of the originals. The pantographs were often finer, glazing was sometimes superior, and the very last Primex model produced, the 33005, was so good it's still considered the best Br23 model made by Marklin until the advent of the 39230 model in recent years.

For those who like Primex I will be posting a message in 'i want to sell' at the weekend with a list of Primex (and a little Marklin) that I want to quit, which are items I don't want from the lots I bought at the Warwick and Warwick auctions.

Looking at that link about the Aldi sets through the eyes of Google translator
https://translate.google...p;edit-text=&act=url

(hope this long link works)

Seems to me the intention was good to make something that kids could easily play with.
My smallest girl enjoys taking out the "Thalys" since it is easy to use and makes noise.
Nonetheless, this new series of sets do not look that impressive, so I get the Gleiswarzen name.
However, the little steam lok, from the above link, is not terrible for a six year old.

Ray, I posted the primex question in another thread.

Cheers,
Mark

A few months late to the party, but I have the Walbrunn station from Faller. Very nice kit. The Faller version is "pre-weathered". It's not too bad as far as factory weathering goes. Can't find a better picture...
A little paint will go a long way from making those kits look very good to great.

Hello,

We have a number of Aldi's now, in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The one close to our house has actually become my wife's favorite grocery. Sadly, I have never seen any re-branded Märklin or Faller products in the store. Though I have asked Beautiful Wife to keep an eye out for train sets. I will now have to Add HO scale buildings to her watch list Wink
