The 103 has sound, digital pantographs. $535.00 US. The AE 3/6 has sound, and switchable two and three rail via a plug in. Both have advanced railcom and mfx auto recognition.

I have an ESU loco that can be easily be configured for either 2 or 3 rail operation.

Remove the slider and it is two rail, reinstall it and it is two rail agin . Brilliant.
Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

I believe that it is a model of the Ae 6/6 and not an Ae 3/6

Yes Mike. I typed 6/6 first, then edited it wrong. Gotta love dyslexia. Some times I confuse left and right, transpose numbers.

I have several ESU models and find them to be of a very high quality with much better sound than Marklin.

I particularly liked user's manual section on maintenance for my ESU loco. It said something like "our models are made of premium materials and will never need to be lubricated". I certainly wasn't used to that!

The motor is cast metal with replaceable brushes, and it looks like it will run forever.

It has more features, nicer detailing and perfect proportions. Too bad ESU does not sell their locos in the US, or I would have many more.

Jim

Hello Jim,

You can purchase ESU locos here in Canada as well as the US from EuroRail Hobbies (https://www.eurorailhobbies.com/). They are a great dealer from whom I often purchase. Prices are very competitive (compared to items I purchase while traveling to Germany). They also ship to the US from Washington State.

I have no relation to EuroRail except for being a very satisfied customer.

Cheers,
Andry

Thanks for the suggestion Andry. I have purchased many items from Eurorail Hobbies and I agree that they are a great resource. Walter in very knowledgeable and friendly and was always great to work with.

But a few years ago shipping from Canada to the US became a lot more expensive and combining that with my credit card charging a fee for paying out of country I switched to a US dealer. I had to return one Marklin Insider model to ERH and paid for the initial shipment, the return shipment to Canada and then again for the return to me from Canada after it was repaired in Germany. I think the total for shipping approached $100 USD. At one time Walter listed ESU models as not for sale to US customers, but I don't think he does that anymore.

My one ESU loco came from MSL and they were also great, but when it needed a motor repair I ended up fixing it myself because returning it to Lippe cost an amazing amount. I contacted a US ESU rep and he said that he could not help in any way because ESU would not even let him buy parts in the US.

So I decided to just stick with Marklin and US dealers at that point, but I still highly recommend ESU locos for anyone not living in the US.
Regards,
Jim
