Hi all,

I asked in another topic about how many of 8 different freight car types you have. Now I would like to ask how many of these you have?

1. Two or three axle metal tin-plate passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be together.

My answer is: 9 and my son has 2 = 11

2. Four axle tin-plate passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.

My answer is: 41

3. Two or three axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.

My answer is: 34 I didn't count into this my four freight train baggage cars.

4. Four axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.

My answer is: 124

5. Six axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.

My answer is: 3 These are the dining cars from Märklin 42754, 42762 and 42765 sets.

These above are all Märklin H0 1:87 cars. Then I have also these plastic H0 1:87 ones from other manufacturers:

5 Röwa DB 4 axle coaches (4 of these are red-beige TEE cars).

6 Roco BBÖ three axle and 8 Roco DRG three axle cars. They are beautiful Love .

5 Liliput DRG Rheingold 4 axle cars (set 820)

3 Liliput DR 4 axle cars

7 Schicht DR 4 axle cars

4 Trix K.Bay.Sts.B. coaches. 3 of them are 4 axle and 1 is 6 axle. They are luxury cars München-Hamburg. They are VERY detailed Love and four axle coaches are green and six axle dining coach is light brown.

So all together the total number of my passenger rolling stock from other manufacturers than Märklin is 38. All Märklin passenger cars 213. Total all together H0 1:87 is 251.

I have also Märklin 1 Gauge 1:32 passenger wagons. 2 two axle type and 2 three axle type.

Many thanks in advance for answers ThumpUp .

Best regards,
Janne

Edited by user 14 August 2018 22:01:29(UTC)  | Reason: Updated the list. I sold today eight tin-plate four axle passenger cars.

These are good forum topics. I always find myself thinking....I don't have that much rolling stock, I just buy locomotives. When I look at these totals, I am pretty sure I am close to having too much rolling stock ;)

Hi Janne,

When seeing your questions I realize that the best answer would probably be far too many. I have an Excel file listing all passenger coaches and with reservations for entry errors the list contains close to 700 coaches.

Using the sorting function of Excel I can for instance find out that I have:

11 AMTRAK

4 CFL

15 CIWL

210 DB

34 DB AG

7 DR

16 DRG

33 DSB

35 FS

7 NS

35 SBB/CFF/FFS

94 SJ

11 SJ AB

17 SNCB/NMBS

49 SNCF

4 SSRT/SJ AB

3 TKAB

67 ÖBB

Just to list some of them. I don't think I could categorize them as you suggest. Furthermore I have coaches from Fleischmann, Jouef, Liliput, Lima, Märklin, NMJ, Rivarossi, Roco, Trix and Walters to name a few manufacturers. 349 of them are from Märklin and 218 from Roco to name the two largest.

Yes, I forgot the six axle type passenger cars. I don't have any of them yet, but the 42762 DRG set have one six axle dining car. It will be then my first. May I ask you, what six axle plastic passenger cars do you have?

Yes in the basement - room of a bit over 15 square metres. I'm in a phase when I'm thinking about different ideas for how to build a layout there as well. My idea had been to have it dimensioned for a maximum length of trains of seven 30 cm coaches plus engine (or nine 24 cm coaches). However since then I've got myself Märklin's TGV and Thalys and they are a bit longer. This means that platforms at a station would be terribly long and would dominate the layout. For that reason I'm thinking of taking some ideas from København H (Copenhagen) where the station building is above the tracks and at a 90 degree angle compared to the tracks. I may even hide some of the station under some city blocks of houses and only have platforms of a metre or so. But I have also realized that I have to make room for my train collection in another store room in the basement or at least for storing empty boxes, since I plan on having some display cabinets in the train room.

Regarding the size of the collection - that is what happens when you got your first tinplate coach in 1958 for Christmas and then continued collecting from then.

4 axle passenger modern coaches... I lost count years ago. I think that I could open a store or a museum.
If it runs through Switzerland, there's a good chance that I have it

Marklin = teak Mitropa Diners
Trix = teak Mitropa diners
Fleischmann = red Mitropa sleeper
Fleischmann = burgundy Mitropa sleeper
Marklin = CIWL diner

12 might be optimistic; I probably counted a couple of 4-axle Mitropas in that figure.

I don't know exactly how many passenger cars I'm owning. I've stopped counting.

But I have passenger cars from those rail companies: DB / DBAG, DRG, DR (Eastern Germany), K.W.St.E. (Württemberg), KPEV (Prussia), CIWL, CSD, PKP, FS, ÖBB, BLS, SBB, CFL, SNCB, SNCF, SJ, DSB, MAV, Alex/Arriva, Cisalpino, Amtrak, Santa Fe

Manufacturers of these passenger cars are Roco, Märklin (including Primex), Fleischmann, Trix, Liliput, Schicht/Sachsenmodelle, Piko, Hag, Kleinbahn, Hornby-Acho (a previous French branch of Hornby), Frateschi.

Rolling TGV models or Thalys with 6 coaches, of course is not absolutely prototypical but to my taste is perfect illusion...

if I had to choose the best finish in the last 2 years I would place the Thalys and TGV in first place ( tied with few others ...most of them among high end models.)

Huummmmm, Blink Unsure

That's got me thinking....... off to Excel we go;

1. Two or three axle metal tin-plate passenger cars = 0
2. Four axle tin-plate passenger cars = 13 (2 x 42283 Rheingold sets + a 4064)
3. Two axle plastic passenger cars = 3
4. Four axle plastic passenger cars = 59 (41928, 42229, 2 x 42750, 42754, 42762/3, rest singles)
5. 3 axle plastic cars = 4
6. 6 axle plastic cars = 2 (dining coaches from 42754/42762)

Other makes cars are:

1. Two or three axle metal tin-plate passenger = 0
2. Four axle tinplate = 0
3. Two axle plastic = 0
4. Four axle plastic = 6 (Liliput, Roco)
5. 3 axle plastic = 7 (Roco)
6. 6 axel plastic cars = 1 (Trix)

Think that's it, though I may have put in 4 plastic coaches for the 29640 set but I can't recall if it has 3 or 4 of them Confused

A quick squizy in the display cabinet and I think that's it

Sad when its cheaper to buy a new 29640 starter set from Germany than a CS2 on its own in Oz, welcome to the joys of Marklin down under .

After selling my German stock, I focus on HO scale Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF, ATSF) - or Santa Fe - four-axle lightweight coaches. I amassed in a relatively short time span (since October) 20 four axle (rather) plastic passenger cars:

- new Frateschi Santa Fe Streamliners (2 sleepers, 1 coach, 1 diner & 1 baggage car)
- used or new Maerklin Streamliners (Santa Fe: 3 coaches, 3 baggage cars, 2 sleepers, 1 observation car & Rio Grande: 1 dome car)
- vintage Fleischmann Santa Fe Hi-Liners (3 coaches & 2 lounge cars)

Hi Ak,

I like the way you can readily mix stock from various makers, to get the realistic consists you want.
I think like that too.

Slightly off topic.
I have quite a bit of US prototype in 2 rail, and managed to get 4 of the Frateschi cars in Pennsylvania livery from a retailer here.
I am very impressed with them regards running, close coupling and value for money.

I have a friend from Brazil, and he lives in a town close to the one where Mr Frateschi manufactures.
In Brazil, Mr Frateschi sells only South American models. His US models go to overseas retailers.
So unfortunately, my friend is unable to get more Pennsylvania cars for me.
And the local retailer will get them only occasionally.

If I did not model Norfolk and Western and Pennsylvania, I think I would go for Santa Fe and Burlington.

regards
Kimball

Thanks Kimball,

I share your appreciation of Frateschi coaches. AFIK there are only three dealers outside of Brazil selling Frateschi stock, located in Australia, South Africa & Switzerland, respectively. Importing from any of these countries is cumbersome when living in the EU.

Dutch forum member Gregor just ordered some PRR coaches by Frateschi in Switzerland:

Hi Alan,

What a treasure you have found Love Drool ! Thanks for posting the photo from them here. Those small tinplate wagons I got today were the very first versions from 4002 329/1 (I got three of these) and 4003 329/4 (I got one). These are nothing comparing to your treasure, but they are the oldest versions from 1951-1953. In very good condition, but without boxes. I paid 12 ThumpUp euro for all four, so only 3 euro per wagon. According to Koll's these are worth 30 euro per wagon in top condition with boxes = 120 euro all four. So I paid 1/10th of this and will be happy running them on my old analog 1950's garage layout. Smile They have very different color tone than the newer 1960's 4002 and 4003. Now I have in total 6 of 4002 type 2nd class wagons and 3 of 4003 type package wagons. I like these as they look good with smaller locos, but are not the very short 4000 (327/1) type. These I have are 13,5 cm long and those 4000 are two cm shorter 11,5 cm long. Not much difference, but visually in my opinion these longer ones look much better.

Janne

Alan,

It looks like you have a lot of the "right stuff" in red boxes ThumpUp . Or do you prefer more the even older grey boxes with older items?

I have been visiting here in Finland one Märklin collector who has many same looking old red boxes with a lot of treasures to be found in his place.

Your collection is great!

Janne

Hi all,

I updated my list in the first posting. I got today three Märklin DSB 4045.1 tinplate coaches in very good condition, three Märklin FS 4036.1 tinplate coaches with poor condition roofs (otherwise quite good condition), two like new SJ 4072.2 plastic coaches, one like new SJ 4073.2 plastic coach and one DRG two axle plastic baggage car.

I had already many 4045.1's, 4036.1's, 4072.1's, 4072.2's, 4073.1's and 4073.2's in my Collection, but you can never have enough of these beauties can you? Love .

Cheers,

I have only 13, 2 are baggage cars, and all are plastic 4 axel cars. Also, all are green and less than 22.5 cm in length. I have imposed the length restriction due to 360 mm curves in many locations. My favorite cars are the 4131 to 4133 rebuild cars. I also have a five section TEE train.

Alright, my collection isn't huge, so I'm going to attempt this from my head...
1. Two or three axle metal tin-plate passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be together.
10: 2x 4000, 1x 4007, 6x 4002, 1x4003, one 4003 in disrepair (not counted)

2. Four axle tin-plate passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.
8 346 series and 9 4xxx series. 17 total

3. Two or three axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.
4 4004/4005 and 2 red/white 2 axle cars, 6 total

4. Four axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.
0

5. Six axle plastic passenger cars? Also baggage, post etc. cars can be all together.
0

My conclusion? I need more tinplate! I love the older tinplate cars and I'm hoping to collect a series of 346/3j, but they're becoming increasingly rare...

I have only 219 passenger cars of various road names, and types. My system doesn't allow for such fine detail, and quite frankly I was/are not that discerning when adding them to the database.

I have tried to match up with the cars with the loks by country. Lately I have been buying the marklin sets(consist) as I buy the engines. I have 67 passenger cars sets with 3 or more cars
to the matching loks. I have another 15-20 cars that are add-on's to the sets. Such as restaurant, sleeping and baggage cars.

With the sets, Marklin has made my life much easier.

Regards, gene
