Good find, Stephen!

I love seeing the old trains and also the vehicles of the period.

In those days they relied heavily on manual procedures for safely dealing with emergencies. I wonder how good modern automated procedures are in comparison? You will have seen that the accident was dealt with by four employees on the derailed train and two signal men plus porters, stationmasters and local police and ambulancemen. With the lean manning of all these services today I wonder whether lives are more at risk?

I think that the gap between trains was longer and the trains themselves were slower. It is simply not feasible for the guard in a train (BTW they don't have them in many trains these days) to walk back and lay detonators on the track, before a 300km/hr TGV came along and moved him into the next life. When was the last time you saw an operational signal box? Fully functioning automated braking systems are a necessary part of the solution..

Let's not forget that this film was made in 1957 - not long after the war - so passengers were used to doing what they were told and were aware that it was for their safety. Now days, people are too impatient and will simply jump out of the train and start walking to the next station..

I love these old instructional films.
