New to Marklin....kind of - How to look after old kit

Joined: 18/07/2016(UTC) Posts: 7 Location: England, Hants		Hello all. My name is Steve and I am now the proud owner of my favourite childhood memory - my Grandfathers train set! I don't know much about what I have here, but it is so important to me and I want to protect/preserve so my children can enjoy it one day also. I do know that my uncles all played with it when they were young (circa 1950's) and it has made in West Germany on a lot of the items. I will try and get photos and details up to help. Got it out and set up a small loop and with a bit of lube all but one engine pulls :) I have four german engines and one Santa Fe. I think I need to upload photos to a site and then link from there so will figure that out soon.

		Ray Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Hi RayF, thanks The bigger of the three small ones - 3000 89028 are the model details on its side. It buzzes if you move the direction lever but I suspect a dry connection so will open her up for a look. The wheels turn with the resistance I would expect so possible that the motor is okay...

Joined: 11/05/2013(UTC) Posts: 488		Could be the reversing spring needs adjustment or replacement. It is the same part as your other locomotives. Part# 7194. Marklin's web site has a parts view under the service section. Good luck, be careful as the Marklin bug is dangerous to your wallet! Fred

Welcome to the forum! If you are used to soldering, carefully remove the insulation clear coating on both parts of the broken wire an solder it together. If you don't feel comfortable with a soldering iron, perhaps you have a friend who is. Not counting the time for the soldering iron to heat up, fixing the broken wire could very well be a 5 minutes job if being very careful not to further brake the wire coming out of the field magnet coil. The reversing relay spring is missing. It is part 7194 and at Märklin's Internet site a small bag with 5 of them costs € 2.99. However the Märklin Online shop charges a € 19:95 shipment fee to the UK, so I would suggest trying to find a cheaper source for that spare part. Once the broken wire has been fixed it is just a matter of cleaning the locomotive from old oil and give it a few drops of new oil, mount the relay spring and start testing it. The black screw on top of the relay is for adjusting the spring.

Joined: 22/01/2009(UTC) Posts: 14,715 Location: On 1965 Märklin Boulevard just around from Roco Square		Steve, as the above member mentioned get rid of the insulation on the wire, I have done a few in the past whereas I've wounded the wire around the hole a few times (this is of course if there is enough wire to do it, make sure you've taking enough insulation off so you can put a nice amount of solder onto it and than just solder the wire to it, this will give it a more solid connection point. I would also strongly recommend you clean the wheels especially the front one as it will be essential for a good and solid contact, actually I would recommend it for all locos. to be sure the motor runs for a longer period, take the brush plate off by removing 2 screws (diagonally) and clean the armature, clean the brush plate inside and the brush tensions. you than will find it will last for another 50 years.
