Alstom has been nominated preferred bidder for the supply of new intercity trains for Dutch railways NS.
It is expected that supply contracts will be signed this summer.
The supply will cover 80 single deck trains for a total of 25,000 seats.
Servicespeed will be 200 km/h and trains will be suitable for two power systems,1,500 volts DC on the national network and 25,000 volts AC on the high speed lines.
It is expected that design will be based on the Alstom Coradia V200 product.
Last Alstom supply for NS were the electric locomotives series 1600/1700/1800,in service from the early eighties, these have proven to be very reliable.

At least you know that you as the tax payer will be paying for something that you can use. We in South Africa have payed 2.65 billion ZAR(South African Rands) for 13 deasel locomotives that are found to be too tall for our rail system (too close to the catenary) !! So they are just parked on a siding, rusting. Offcourse there was incompetance and corruption in the tender process. And this was the first batch of 88 locomotives!!!

Jay,i am sorry to hear that.
Chips happen!
Our society is i would say 90 percent corruption free, there is always a small grey area where corruption could be a too strong word.
A local politician was brought to court and his defence was that you cannot excercise politics on a local level without a free dinner at some time, there is some merrit in that.
In the office we were always told not to accept anything from suppliers, not even a bottle of wine, and i can understand why.

About mishaps with buying trains: we had our Fyra debacle, these Italian trains where not fit for the job,and were parked idle for a long time near Amsterdam, and thence sent back.
The refund was nowhere near the purchaseprice and the MD of our railways NS was sent away because of it.

Just picked up from an Alstom pressrelease that the initial order for 79 trains could be followed by a second order for 150 trains (80,000 seats).
It would seem NS have in mind to replace at least some of the dubbledeck intercity trains type VIRM by 2021.
Currently NS have 178 VIRM trains in operation,split in 98 x 4 coaches and 80 x 6 coaches.
