Apologies for the rudimentary questions, but I'm trying to get up to speed on Marklin as I build a 1950/1960s nostalgia layout. I see in various catalogs and on eBay freight cars that have numbers 44??, 45??, 46??, and 47?? What are the differences between these series (some of which seems to have the same car)? I'm looking for good solid runners from the 1950s and 1960s (and prefer metal over plastic).

Thanks for any help.

I think it was 1958 when Marklin went to four digit product numbers.

46xx were the higher detailed/quality series. 47xx is the same detail and quality just a new sequence number because they used up all the 46xx numbers. 47xx dates to around the early 80s and beyond.

45xx were concurrent to 46xx and of a lesser detail, but they have a nice charm none the less and there are some great wagons from this group.

44xx were the replacement for the 45xx series, so less detail than 46/47xx. They date to the middle 70s and beyond. Of the three series, 44xx is the group I typically pass, partly because they are usually era 4 and I do era 3, but also because I find them less inspiring.

Era 3
DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe
But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.

This website has a good presentation of the wagons in the 44xx, 45xx, 46xx series:

I would also recommend to look at the wagons in the Primex brand, as they are often different versions of the 1960s 45xx and 46xx Marklin series.

Thanks for the comments. Can you tell me in what ways the features of the 46xx and 47xx cars are higher quality?

46xx and 47xx wagons tend to have a higher level of detail and more accurate dimensions than 45xx or 44xx wagons. More recent examples also have close couplers rather than the more basic Relex couplers.

45xx wagons from the 1960s and 70s are generally quite crude representations, but people like them for their character and because they are often made entirely of metal. Be aware that there are also some recent 45xx wagons which are not properly of the same series as the older wagons. For example some modern US wagons are numbered in the 45xx series though they resemble the 46xx series more closely.

44xx wagons started in the 1970s as replacements for the 45xx series and generally are more accurate than the wagons they replaced. They are almost all plastic and are ruggedly made with few details, but many look fairly good alongside 46xx wagons.

We can see the differences in the series by comparing similar wagons in each
