MOD ** New topic created from this original topic... Pre war British Catalogue

Paul
Thanks for the information. Did you have a chance to look at the set currently on our ebay. I've asked for some more photos of the label if any. It looks like a complete R765LNE. Some of the loco looks like a repaint and the 381 is missing the couplings. The tender has been touched up around the chassis but the body is original. The 342LMS look original but difficult to tell if the bogies are intact. The seller is very elusive and has an auction house email address but has never sold any Marklin before so it looks a bit dodgy to me. he is after $4000 which is way out what I spend. It may get that on German ebay and more. I would guess this set is quite rare with the R700 rather than the R800
Kind regards
Roger

Hi Roger,

Yes I've seen that set, I wondered if it was the impetus for this thread BigGrin

I, too, asked for photos of the box label (if it says R 765 LNER) -- I believe it would be LNER and not just LNE. But I didn't hear back from the seller so I assume the box label fell off.

From the photos everything looks to be original, and probably a fairly safe bet with this seller given it is an auction house. The 343 LMS does appear to be original -- and although the 342 is more common as an LMS car, Marklin did make 343 cars in the LMS variant.

best wishes,

Paul

That's an important key to this puzzle. As I hinted previously, without lots of proper photos, information and a seller that's a serious collector, at full price I would pass.

I could not agree more with your sentiment that the seller looks strange. If I had a set like this and wanted top dollar I would be answering every ones questions and taking more photos. He has never sold any Marklin but makes out he is an expert and quotes Version 1 etc. Good luck to him as he will never get is sold in a fit the way he's going. If nothing else we all learned a bit.

I've asked some questions too but no reply after many days.

No, I didn't. I thought I'd first clarify a couple of things about the listing but now any possible interest is vanishing rapidly.

I heard back and got some more photos and an answer that there is no set label on the box, which unfortunately means much lower value. The set could have been pieced together (although it does look like it all came together originally).

I'm at work so perhaps there are some photos at home as well. The seller obviously has done some homework but not enough. What value do you place on the small collection now. Which of course is different to what we are willing to pay for it. I doubt if he will budge much from his dream figure.
