Question for readers:

Can any lok motor be converted to digital, or do some need to be replaced in order to do the conversion? If they need to be replaced, why?

Thx in advance for your replies!

Paul

The load regulation of standard decoders works with DC motors only. Most people convert AC/DC motors to DC motors in order to use standard decoders with load regulation.

There also are decoders for AC/DC motors without load regulation. IMHO it is a waste of time and money to install such decoders. For a few Euros more you can convert he motor to DC and get load regulation.

Just that some are more difficult than others (with apologies to George Orwell in Animal Farm).

For the 3015/CCS800 and others with the largest motor it is easier now that ESU have a magnet that can be used to convert the motor to a DC motor, but it is still only a 3 pole armature.

But even without the ESU magnet it was possible to convert those locos to digital.
Often there are several options with different costs and different benefits.
