MIchael Portillo is half way through the fifteen part series and tonight marks the start of his second American journey.

Michael Portillo's railway journeys are excellent documentaries. I always look forward to watching them, whether they are set in UK, Europe, or the rest of the world.

His quirky public school image goes well with the theme of the series, as he retraces the journeys chronicled in his Bradshaw's and other guide books from the last century.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Comment has been made that he has toned down his appearance for the American series on the basis that the people he meets may "misunderstand" him!. I love the programmes and will watch them on the I-player ad infinitum but would make a comment that the US series so far seems to be more history and less trains.

I'm sure he'd go down well in San Francisco wearing his normal multicoloured outfits ... Scared Scared Scared

The full episodes can be found on Youtube.

Dress code: in Holland men (real men!) can be found wearing red or yellow trousers during summertime, much to the amazement of foreigners.
I would say please do not judge the book by the cover.
A long time ago i spent a year in New Zealand,i saw real men wearing short trousers, knee socks and ties in the office, something you simply will never do in Holland, but never say never.

Mr.Portillo has a perfect commentator voice, able to explain the great achievements of the USA in easy to understand language,i like that.
Who saw the episode where he visited West Point, explaining that later famous generals of the Union and Confederancy were educated together there?

Great stuff!

I have to withdraw any "criticism " I have made earlier. This week Portillo has been wearing a very bright green jacket or a lemon yellow crumpled linen jacket he must have found at the bottom of his suitcase. There have been plenty of trains - old and new and some very good scenic shots and some very well balanced history lessons. He is much better at this than he ever was as a politician and he looks much happier for it.

I might as well buy a bright green jacket too, what a splendid idea, old chap!

The series explains why the railways are there in the first place.
It is correct that it is not all about trains but all in all the subjects handled in 30 minutes time are well balanced,i think.
And yes,in particular i like the history lessons, especially when it comes to the Civil War of 1860-1865,what a waste of good men!

I also like the grandeur of the USA railwaystations in the big cities, almost temples, built in a time when travelling by train was an adventure.

Mr.Portillo,please carry on!

Two episodes to get the taste of it.

To make a confession: George C.Patton, educated at West Point,is my all time hero.

Apart from anything else,i like the "elevated" music in this series.

Note that the word Burg comes from the old German/Dutch word Burcht, which means Castle.
Still today,in Holland a citizen is called "burger".
