On 29 December 2015 I was lucky enough to be invited (again) to a special fun filled day playing and talking all things Märklin at the Kleiner Moos Bahn, and so I thought I would take along my camera and grab a few pictures for the Forum. There was no real structure to the day, lots of general running and I spent a lot of time playing with the turntable and running some special items..................................

Superb pictures,Glenn!

On Van Gogh: Before he left for France he lived in the south of Holland in a time of great poverty.
One of his most well known paintings is "De Aardappeleters" (=The Potato eaters),painted in 1885.
It portraits a poor family of farmers picking boiled potatoes from one single pan, whilst coffee is being poored in cups.
No meat,no vegetables.
Van Gogh did have an open eye for the sufferings of the common people.

I'm curious about the paint scheme on the P8 and the mallet. Were those war paint schemes???

Hi Ken,

No they are just different 'weathered' models.

This one is the Einheiz loco Märklin item 33191, circa 2004, which has an almost hand applied weathered finish which I think is quite effective.

Einheiz loco reworked for M-Users - small.jpg]

This one is a weathered BR96 Märklin item 37969, which seems to be loco people either like or loath due to the way the weathering just appears to have been applied by an airbrush over the original paint scheme. I would say I feel it looks better in the 'flesh' the weathering being more subtle than under harsh strobe lighting. This method of weathering has been used on a number of recent models.

jcrtrains

Thanks for the kind words.

Yes the roadbed is Merkur.

The black and white images with a hint of colour were done using the layering technique in Photoshop. I understand there are various Apps that you can buy that will mimic this technique but the BR80 and BR10 images shown here were done 'old school'.

In case you do not know what layering is I will try to explain, thus;

To produce the BR80 image I start with an image shot in RAW format and first I finalise a colour image and save it, then I use the same RAW image and make a black and white image of the background and save it, then finally I use the RAW image to make a black and white conversion of the loco itself. I now have three versions of the same image, one colour (layer 1), one black and white conversion for background (layer 2) and one black and white conversion for the loco body (layer 3).

I then place the colour image (layer 1) as a layer over the black and white background image (layer 2) and using the layers function in Photoshop I then 'paint' through the background image where I want the background to be (ie everywhere except the loco and the coloured bits) onto the colour image. This leaves me with a hybrid image which has both colour and black and white present.

I then place this hybrid image over the black and white loco image (layer 3) and again I 'paint' through the loco body image onto the hybrid image.

The result is a final picture that in reality consists of the components of three different images in layers.

The image is then flattened to show only the final manipulated image. This final jpeg image is 165mb in size, as it contains the final image plus the three individual images that make up the layers.

I hope this makes sense. Photoshop has great tools and magnification functions that allows the edge detail to be enhanced for accurate detailing around the loco and colour parts, the downside is that it is time consuming. The BR80 image took about 3.5 hours.

All the best

New addition to this thread, a video showing the bespoke lighting system in use at the Kleiner Moss Bahn, as it changes from day to dusk, to night, to dawn and back to daylight. (Please note this video has also been posted in the Forum under the lighting thread). Enjoy

Just your new video and can see that you had solved "the problem" with constant light on the locomotivs in the engine shed.

Have consulted the Danish blog Baneforum and here was the recommendation to isolate all K rails from the rail pieces (7287) protruding from the turntable.

So it will probably be the solution !

Sorry that I used this thread to this question, but I fell in the "water"

Hi Ross,

I have slowed the trains down to try and show off the great detail that some of the models have, I find with my video camera if the action is too fast or light too low it fails to resolve detail, and everyhting just looks a little blurred.

Hi,

Sorry but the layout it not mine and so I am unable to answer your question. I have mailed the owner and asked him if he can answer your question. He is in the middle of some major upgrades to the layout and so I doubt he has been in the Forum recently.

Just your new video and can see that you had solved "the problem" with constant light on the locomotivs in the engine shed.

May I ask how you did this ?

Hi,

Sorry but the layout it not mine and so I am unable to answer your question. I have mailed the owner and asked him if he can answer your question. He is in the middle of some major upgrades to the layout and so I doubt he has been in the Forum recently.

Best Regards

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "the problem" with constant lighting on locomotives in the engine shed! All the engine shed tracks are separately provided with Digital power, independent of the turntable.

Many thanks I am so glad you like them. It is always a pleasure to visit the Kleiner Moos Bahn and enjoy all the delights that come with it.

I trust you and the family are well, sorry I missed your trip earlier in the year.
