Yesterdag a test TGV derailed in the eastern part of France, with at least 10 technicians killed.
Information on this Sundaymorning is scarce but i understand it was driving too fast (!).
The track is new and not yet in use for daily service.

Another very sad event. One cannot make a snap guess about this event. The tracks needs to be scrutinized carefully now. Peter Confused

The report shown on the news here tonight says there were children also onboard - wtf?? - possibly the children of some of the technicians.

Were any of them also killed?

Very sad. Presumably these trains have a live camera in the cab?

Something very out of sync with this accident.
Reports of children on a test train sounds just reckless.
Anyone seen anything else online that can be posted here?
Too sad to consider in the wake of Daesh attacks in Paris.

DB DR FS NS SNCF c. 1950-65, fan of station architecture esp. from 1920-70.
In single point perspective, where do track lines meet?

According to SNCF,the French state railways, the TGV was having a speed of 243 km/h at the moment of derailment, whereas the maxiumum allowed speed was 176 km/h.
Just prior to the accident, the train reached a speed of 265 km/h.
It is said that the enginedriver pulled the brakes much too late,he should have done so 1,000 mtrs earlier.
And,indeed, the children should not have been on the train.

Now than, the max.speed of 176 km/h is peculiar,in continental Europe it is common to round figures to say either 170 km/h or 180 km/h.
Furthermore i wonder whether no train control system was in force to start automatic braking.
Was the test track without any control system?
The enginedriver must have been very experienced, only the most experienced drivers are allowed to drive the TGV.
Did he see the track before, did he know there was a curve in the track where a speedlimit was in force?

Questions,questions.
